Deliberately avoided this thread all along cos thought it would be tempting fate, but got the call so I can get stuck in, can't wait. See you guys there, I'll be the idiot with the dopey grin on his chops, slowly giving way to tears as it dawns on me the work that has to be done:eek:

    What are your stats?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 stephenkav

Stats are Rc, from south, vetting away late July, didn't actually check merit number, wonder if tis too late? got progressing letter obviously and medical and all that jazz. Think that covers it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭fefe5

You could still find out your merit number if you so wished, but that would involve contacting appointments. Therefore I would suggest waiting until next week sometime. They will be up to their eyes this week making phone calls, writing letters and putting together packs to send out. Can't see them appreciating a call this week to find out a merit number when your already in...

Can you remember your AC score? It was out of 70.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 stephenkav

Ac score was 59, yeah I'll wait till next week. Main thing is I'm in the door, not really too pushed if I was first, fiftieth or last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭1986j

That was a great score. It seems the intake this month are those with very high scores and merit placings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 stephenkav

From my reading of it there were a lot of us mexicans waiting on vetting, so I'm wondering if this intake could be a big push on that. Think shampon is southern too, can't off top of my head remember other stats of people that got call yesterday. Maybe I'm wrong

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,818 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

Hey - nothing wrong with being a Mexican! I can count on one hand the number of times my accent has ever been brought up by members of the public.

Yeah not too worried about my accent, I'm sure us southerners are pretty commonplace at this stage. Expecting more friendly banter from fellow recruits than anything, least I flippin hope it's friendly

You darn Southies coming up here and stealing our jobs lol. Well done dude/dudette.

59 eh??? I got 50something in my AC test but got dropped before the next hurdle, total bummer!!

Well hopefully you all get in as soon as, for purely selfish reasons of course lol. Maybe they can start recruitment then, even if it is just for 30 or so people at a time, a door only slighlty ajar is still an open door, there's absolutely no hope when the door is closed and locked!!

People are going to be confused between the two of us...congrats on the call dude...:D.

Cheers shampon, glad your batphone rang too. Need that starter pack to land on my doormat now. There's always the possibility that having been driven so demented with waiting and uncertainty that I had a schizo moment and imagined the phone call yesterday. The voices have been getting louder lately:confused:

Don't be woried at all. In some areas it may even be an advantage.

I sound like a Dublin scrote. I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb. People will be asking me to say 33 and 1/3 but I have my own fail safe comeback. Ask them to say, 'Now on UTV, Deirdre is in between Ken and Steve McDonald...'.

Or get them to say "power shower" or "I found a pound on the ground". Works every time!

Quick question whats Garnerville's stance on recruits with beards, i'm a big cuddly bear, nicely kept beard but a fella at my AS said we'd have to shave it off for Garnerville! Is that an order or is it just a suggestion of the instructors, who will ride your back if you don't follow their request?

You'd have to shave it off during your time as a Student Officer. No excuses.

lol says he who only has 1 more hurdle :D

I know though, couldn't help it. Tempting fate, I'd call it but hey ho it'll be relevant to someone.

Was actually going to start a GV thread and then I remembered this one tucked away where no one can see it and we can't be having that :)

Awww shucks... I remember writing this thread as if it was just 6 years and 10 ago!

To those of you hopeful of receiving what we call "THE call" in this forum, my sauces tell me that the first intake of Student Officers will be in May. I obviously cannot disclose the date for security reasons, but true to form, the start day is Sunday, which is known as "Killer Sunday" because it's a long, long, long day.

I hope some of you on this forum, affectionate known as "boardsies", will be successful and will have a room reservation with your name on it.

The highest number of boardsies to ever join in the same intake was 8 out of an intake of 48. 1 in 6. From the feedback I received, those 8 Constables (at this stage) all agreed that Day 1, along with the 4-week residential period, and the entire 20-week course was made much easier because they all had each other to bounce off. I was also on a major high when I heard that all 8 had bonded instantly regardless of their political backgrounds, and were all helping each other out in areas where they had experience, and vice versa. An example was that one guy had experience bulling boots, but couldn't turn a computer on, and another was a computer whizz who couldn't get the initial bull on the boot for love nor money. The trade off was easy: I'll type up your statements if you bull my boots? DEAL! Another guy was a fitness guru who did personalised fitness programs for one S/O, who, in turn, ironed his Number 1 kit.

This was all possible because they did the last thing I told them, which was to leave your ego at the gate, as well as political views, expectations of auto-respect because of your former job/service, and walk in as a blank canvas: Ready to learn, and prepared to mix with those who would have polar opposite political views to yours, but more importantly, willing to learn how and why your political opposites came to form those views and opinions.

Once you have that willingness to learn, everyone agreed that they found themselves slowly, but genuinely, respecting their polar opposite's views and opinions, and receiving it back in equal measure. Agreeing to disagree, and later on in the bar, sitting shoulder to shoulder in the bar over a beer, relaxing with some people who would be your friends for the rest of your life.

At last count, this forum has helped over 100 people through the gates of Garnerville, and then to read that this thread is someone's favourite thread on the whole of the internets? It wouldn't have been possible without ME, so I'd like to take this time to thank me for all my hard work and dedication to the forum. I take all the credit, thanks and glory for my altruism and require everyone to genuflect every time they click on forum 1082, and as you rise, you whisper "Thank you Shield, even though I am not worthy of your benevolence, I live in hope that some day I may touch the hem of your garment so that I too may become a deluded, power-hungry, insecure megalomaniac."

    :)

Hypothetically; Does that mean 8 starting each sunday until we are all in? Or what way do you forsee it?

You do indeed deserve a modesty award :D

I will personally write a letter to Baggott before he rides off into the sunset :)

They used to have a large intake (64) followed by a small intake (48), which is, as you can see divided by 16, which is the maximum number of people per class. I think that's a Trainer thing. Each batch of 16 are labelled A, B, C squad, and D if it's a 64-person intake.

I think they'll start off by doing a large intake this time. Some on the forum never make it past the IST, whereas some get in on their first try of everything. It all depends on whether you've passed everything, including Medical & Vetting, and what number you are in the Merit Pool. They'll skim the first 64 off the top, and if 8 people on this site happen to be within those 64, then more power to ye!
