According to Fingal County Councillor USI failed in their voter registration drive by filling out forms incorrectly. As a result many students living in the Fingal County Council area that USI "assisted" to register to vote, have lost their right to vote in the coming general election.

The error appears to have been discovered after the closing date for registrations, so no remedial action could be taken by USI or the students involved.

    USI- no thanks!

    From @AlanFarrell on 10 February
"Lots if disappointed USI members failed to be registered by Fingal Co Co because they were not properly submitted. #ge11"

    What did they do incorrectly?

No idea. Did DCU SU register voters as well?

I haven't heard anything about DCU students being affected. I posted it here because it is a thread about whether or not DCU should be affiliated with USI.

If you registered with USI or a USI affiliated SU and you are not on the register I'd recommend you contact your SU and check what happened.

I dont know if the TCD SU is affiliated, I take little interest in college politics tbh. I was just reading the thread and saw that so i thought i would ask. But it sounds like that is what may have happened.

I have started a thread in TCD forum anyway so thanks for the reply.

I would completely flip if I was one of those students, how on earth could they mess that up?

fingers crossed DCU this year. USI always seem toothless to me...do they have student's interests at heart or is it just career progression for the heads. Student Unions are going to have to get more proactive over the coming years. Can you see USI as it is having any cohesive strategy for the challenges for students in the years to come?

This cock up with voter registration should be investigated!!!

They posted the correctly completed forms to the council in the same envelope instead of sending each form in a seperate envelope. I dislike the USI as much as the next person but this anti-usi rabble does seem a little frivolous...

How many students were affected and from which colleges? Have they been informed?

I think USI dis-enfranchising student voters is not a frivolous matter!

That it? Sounds like more like the council not wanting to take time out of their tea break than anything else!

Was this the first year the USI did this? It certainly looks like a great idea.

I agree it appears to be an a facetious reason to discount the registrations, thankfully common sense won out in the form of the Appeals Court accepting their registration.

TCD SU are affiliated to the USI- ex-Deputy President Conan O Broin was TCDSU President last year.

Gary "Vote Fianna Fail for Jobs" Redmond was re-elected president of the USI with 92% of the vote. Those votes came not from students by the way, but from full time sabbatical officers.

I gather he quit to campaign in the general elections. Is that correct?

I presume he was unopposed. If SU officers voted for him, there will be no moves to disaffiliate as it is SU officers that drive such moves.
