For some reason it pisses me off! Why do people feel the need to do it?

I guess because it creates a nice and formal post.

I finish serious posts by signing them, I don't know why either.

What the fuck is that? ^^^

People sign an e-mail because is it more formal than an anonymous post on an internet forum. Why do people sign a letter when their name is clearly at the top of the letter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,331 ✭✭✭RichieC

    It promotes self importance.

It is a little smug tbf, going to stop doing it..

On another forum i go there's some bat that's been there so long she has her own smiley, she signs everyone of her sanctimonious, holier than thou posts with it..

    Stupid republican B*tch

    Drives me up the wall.

    It's just pure smugness.

It's like all those people who drive Toyota Prius' and love the smell of their own farts.

and love the smell of their own farts.
    Who doesn't?

    I agree 100% op
It has the effect of making the poster seem like a complete wanker

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

AnonoBoy doesn't sign his posts. AnonoBoy merely refers to himself in the third person as it creates an aura of mystery and sophistication and promotes the idea that AnonoBoy is a f*cking annoying git.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,470 ✭✭✭Mr_Roger_Bongos

Its very annoying, because if you read quickly you end up reading their username which is pointless as

IT'S ATTACHED TO YOUR POST ALREADY!

Signing one's username at the end of posts, no matter how long or short, really does smack of arrogance and self importance. Not much else can be said. It clearly does not serve any constructive purpose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 322 ✭✭Apolloyon

I think it refers back to ancient times. In the somewhen between whether to call it 'the net' or 'the web' and back again, there was this thing called 'netiquette'. It was important to follow forum rules because most people had dialup. So you had to do stuff like trim notes because when you hit the reply button, the last person's posts were attached and if ten people had posted before you, then there were loads of attached posts to pare down. Also to make it easier to know who had posted what, you had to sign your posts too. I suspect some people just never moved on and are still signing their posts.

Or they could just be jerks! Whichever...:D

They're insecure and think it will give some authority to their post.

It doesn't even have to be signing ones name or username. It can be anything really and it really gets on my wick too.

Its strange because I do not have a problem with anything in a sig. Don't have a problem with catchphrases in a sig, nor a Gamertag, nor a kit list, nor a quote etc I even don't have a problem with ones name in a sig. Maybe because this is something you go into UserCP and do once and forget about it.

However type the same thing at the end of every post everytime you post and all of a sudden, no matter what it is you type be it a name or catchphrase, well it just rubs me the wrong way and I write you off as full of yourself.

TBH that profiling of posters hasn't failed me yet. Anyone I know who does it is indeed a self important sounding, condescending, knowitall prick.

[EDIT] Actually there is one exception. 'Cordially Scofflaw'. He's a sound chap.

Why do people put their email in the email signature that accompanies their outgoing mails?

    I mean, why?????
