    I've decided to buy a diesel passat 2009 - 2010.
Choice has come down to 1.6 Blue motion Vs 2.0 R Line PS 110 from the UK

    Both are the same price.

Have people any opinions as to which is the better car / bad experiences of either?

I know the road tax & insurance will be higher on the 2.0 , but will it hold it's value better given the higher spec?

Well naturally the 2litre diesel is going to be the better car performance wise where as the 1.6 will be more beneficial from a fuel saving point of view. It depends on what your looking for from your car. i have 1.6 petrol passat 2004. I find it guzzles the juice a little bit too much ad struggle to get 400 miles from a full tank. Any ideas what a 1.9/2.0ltr diesel would give on a full tank?

In a passat? Not really... its underpowered.

You are only gaining 5hp. If I was buying a 2.0 I would get the 140 BHP with the 6 speed box. Personally I hate those UK Passats with the saggy imitation leather seats..

    Not necessarily true.
On a big heavy car with a 1.6 litre engine you will constantly mash the throttle and rev it up high to get it to move, while on a 2 litre diesel you will get the same with a very light throttle push and lower revs.
This idea that smaller engine always=economy is not true.
The size of the engine has to match the car and Ireland is a very bad case for it, people here would love to buy 7 series BMW's, S class Mercs and Audi A8's if they only came with a 1.4l engine, everyone would have on in the morning.
I saw an Audi A8 once which proudly proclaimed "1.8" on the bootlid, that tells you withing 3 characters that the person driving it has absolutely no idea about cars whatsoever, he just wants something big and impressive to impress his friends, who will only snigger at him.
So anything bigger than Golf size is not advisable on something like a 1.6, but you can buy a small hatch with a 1.4 and have a blast.
Passat with a 1.9 or 2 litre diesel is probably a good size, anything smaller you're just going to suffer.

Yes the 1.6 Passat even in the new model is terrible. Buy the 1.9 if you are as the 2.0 gives a lot of trouble.

It's not just about 5bhp. The 2.0 litre has an extra gear and more torque than the 1.6 litre meaning it will be under alot less stress. The 2.0 litre (110bhp) is the CR unit so doesn't suffer the same problems as the old PD (140bhp) unit. 1.6 litre is €104 to tax, 2.0 litre is €156, €1 per week extra in tax would not sway me towards the 1.6 litre engine in a car the weight of a Passat.

UK Highline is really only similar to a Comfortline here but with different alloy wheels and cheap looking UK dealer fitted aftermarket leather seats. R Line is based on the Baseline but has imo a terrible body kit that just doesn't suit the shape of the car. If buying from the UK I'd find either a SE-L or Sport model otherwise buy a Highline here, they really have come down in price here now.

Can't really give definite advise on VW's, don't have much experience with them (have Ford meself), but also depends on mileage.
Also depends on the mileage, diesels are good for bigger mileage.
Why not go for the VR6?:D

    The 2.0 110bhp has only 5 gears.

I know and I never knew that until R.O.R told me. The 2.0 140 BHP has a 6 speed box. A mate of mine purchased one before xmas. I have a Irish spec Highline so he thought he was getting the same thing. I got some laugh when I seen the 5 speed box..:p It was as dead as a maggot but he got it remapped to 140..
