I don't like spiders, they are about the only thing Im freaked out by. Don't mind mice etc, my theory is at least you can hear/see them easier than spiders so they cant creep up on you. I don't like killing them all the same...

But, after my house was invaded by those masshooovie house spiders on steriods, I decided to employ the following rule -On my turf (ie in the house) I can brownbread them without guilt, but when on their own turf let them lie. (At the start I would throw the feckers out the back door but I was convinced the same bastards were coming back in time and time again)

Exactly! I run a kill on sight policy in this house, and I also think come back in when you throw them out.

Spiders are ****. they should be made wear aluminous leg warmers so that we can at least see them coming.

    Spiders are brilliant.

You should start killing cats too.

You'd be providing a valuable service then.

I can unfortunately confirm that they most certainly do :( Last summer I found a horrible big nasty fella crawling across my kitchen floor and as I happened to have the hover out at the time I had him sucked up and that was that.

Unfortunately for me the hover bag was very full at the time due to some DIY having been taking place around the time so two days later as I opened the hover and took off the hover bag I was met by the same spider crawling out towards me.

Needless to say i pretty much shat myself

    OMG!!! I would've died!
That's why my hoover is in the shed now

:pac: Ah Jaysus, thats not a big spider, theres a Huntsman here behind the fridge that'd eat him aas a snack.

    That's not a huntsman, that's a spoon.

Spiders are brilliant. Face your fears and put them outside. It's not cool to kill them. Same with slugs in my damp bathroom.

Ì don't mind spiders at all to be honest. When cleaning I used to operate a culling system, whereby i would always leave a certain amount of them behind, as I found flies and such things far more annoying.

Any room I have ever lived in I have always made sure that one spider/web survives any clean ups, during fly season anyway.

I hate spiders as much as the next guy but would you not just chase him outside or something?
I always feel kinda sorry for the poor bastards, they are without doubt the most persecuted species of insect in human history. We as a race have waged a totally unjustified vendetta against them for many, many years, one which probably leaves them feeling that we really are just a shower of absolute wánkers...

And, you know, one day they might rise up and decide to take revenge. Think of "The Birds" but with gigantic swarms of spiders instead.

By the way here is a video of myself and some friends 'bravely' dealing with a spider a few years ago in Kerry. We didn't want to kill him, the idea was to throw him out the window, but when one of the lads got stuck under the bed and the spider escaped in all the confusion, epic chaos unfolded like never before.

I honestly blame my irrational fear of spiders on the film 'Arachnophobia'. That scarred me as a kid.

OP, if you listen very carefully at night, you'll hear the tap tap tap of the spider's hobnail boots as it scuttles around inside the vacuum cleaner living off the dirt you sucked up.

Yeah, same thing happened me but the hoover was partially blocked and when I turned it off, the spider dropped out and ran towards the kitchen.

I swear it was heading to the cutlery drawer to get a knife.

Ah why can't you just get a glass and a piece of paper/cardboard? Glass over the spider (pint glasses work best for the extra wriggle room and you don't want to catch their legs) and then slide the paper beneath the rim. Walk to the door or window and release. I don't see why you have to kill them just because they're in your house. If you don't want them there just put them outside.

I love spiders though and I love the way they keep your room/house relatively creepy-crawly free. I've had a Giant House Spider called Gok around my wardrobe area for months now, and I'm fairly sure I've seen another one scurry in behind the fridge in the kitchen. I haven't given him a name yet though since I've only met him once.

I'm not an Ulster protestant if that's what u think:mad:
Not that it has anything to do with this topic

It was supposed to be a joke, based on a typo in the title, which is now corrected. The word "the" was used instead of "them". I don't know if UP is a common abbreviation, but I have never heard of it anyway.

House spiders can't survive outdoors so putting them outside is as good as killing them

    Seriously!? What about in hedges?

    :(

They eat all the dust and other materials in the hoover (bag) and continue to grow and thrive for many weeks and months while all the time plotting their revenge.
They mate with other spiders they meet in the hoover and produce many many baby spiders. Eventually the hoover bag becomes over crowded, often with hundreds of spiders who have now grown 10 times their original size, forcing them to return to the rooms of your house.

Jaysus, dont be telling me that!

No, sorry, in general outdoor spiders can only live outdoors, indoor spiders can only live indoors

But surely they can survive outside for a short period of time in that case then until they find shelter? Well anyway in light of this new evidence I retract my former plea regarding house spider freedom and brand you all MURDERERS instead.

Does he hang up giant sized pictures of you in your birthday suit outside the house.

I'm wondering about this, as the Giant House Spiders seem to be tough enough to resist the sucktion of the hoover, and you have to really batter them with a magazine before they finally lay still.
A while ago I've even flushed one down the plughole in the bath, only to find him there a few hours later all dryed up and in exactly the same spot, honest to God!
Last night I hoovered one up, and it was a whopper! I wouldn't be surprised to see it emerging back out of the hoover with revenge on it's mind :pac:
But is this possible? Does anyone know?
attached is also a picture of one of these lads

It's best to immediately dip the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner in oetrol, suc up about a half pint, then throw a match in. I enjoy sitting foetally in a corner watching the flames.

This method proves expensive in vacuum cleaners and houses mind you.

They would adapted to indoor conditions, so would be kinda helpless outside, especially when the competition (the bajillions of insects and spiders living in the elements) would be well-suited to the environment. A happy compromise would be to throw them in a shed
