Anybody see these on BBC? One of my favourite programmes ever I have to say. Very realistic and well produced, researched. Think they are up on Youtube as well now. Kinda paved the way for modern farming as we know it.

I just happened to see one of the Victorian ones before the Christmas, very very good show.

There was a nice bit of it on youtube but I think it has been removed. You can buy a DVD of the series. Was thinking of getting it for the aul fella and myself as well I suppose.

Yea I see that they have removed the Victorian farm eposides :(...Still have Edwardian ones up there though. Will just go buy the DVDs, my da would love it as well. Think older generations could really identify with it. I don't think tractor power really only took over from Draught/Shire horses from the 1950s/60s onwards. I agree that a lot of character was lost from farming as a result though of course the advances greatly increased output and reduced labour needs.

Farming was much more diverse back then, nowadays all that you get on a farm is a form of mono culture thats Dependant on imports such as cheap grain from south America, and cheap fertilizers.
I`ll bet that there was a better spirit in the farming community back then also.
