Help to Sync Contacts on ipod touch with gmail

My contacts are on latest generation ipod touch ios version 4.1 and I want to sync contacts with a gmail account. So I followed these instructions setting up an exchange account. At step 13, I selected the keep on my ipod touch option because all contacts are there and I want to load them into gmail.

When I select contacts I have four groups,
All Contacts
All from my PC
Exchange - Contacts
Exchange - Exchange Global Address List.

All my contacts are in the first two folders.

I cannot figure out how to get the contacts into gmail

That's what I did, a while ago, and if you followed the instructions it should be working. It does a Sync whenever mail is checked, so that's the first thing to check: does an email to your Gmail address arrive on the iPod? If not, your settings are wrong. Then try creating a contact in Gmail on the PC and see if it lands on the iPod - and vice versa.

I can send mail from and get instant notification of received mail to the exchange account. One test contact I added in gmail appeared on the ipod

So the access settings are correct. However I cannot get the sync working from ipod to gmail

Without a reply, am I to assume then that it's not possible to sync contacts stored on Apple device to Gmail?
