The Offside Rule - As explained by The Star

Hi all,

I was flicking through tuesday's paper at work yesterday and had a look at the article about the Keys & Gray situation. In a little black box at the bottom of the page was a paragraph defining what the rule actually was. I've got to say it was the mos bizarre explanation I've ever seen and if its correct then I've a feeling quite a lot of people have no idea what the rule is!

A player is considered to be in an offside position if they are in front of the ball when it is played and if there are less than two defending players closer to the opposing team goal line than he or she is.

So then to remain onside, an attacking player must always have two players of the opposing team in front of or level with him or her when the ball is played

Since when has it been 2 players?!?!?

One of the "players" is the goalkeeper.

There was a real good example of this in the opening game at SA last summer. There was a goal disallowed for Mexico when the game was at 1-1, a few of my friends were freaking out as there was a defender on the post (it was a corner). It was the right call though, as the goal keeper was ahead of the attack, and the rule states there must be two opposition players between you and the goal.

Even the commentator gets it wrong. Amazing that there's definitely professional footballers out there who don't know that.

The goalkeeper is usually the other player but thats not always the case.
For example if the keepre goes up for a corner and there is a counter attack.
Reminds me of Longfords winner against Waterford in the cup final 5 or 6 years ago but no one noticed he was a mile offside as there was a defender back while the keeper had gone up for a corner.

I've always thought that rule should be changed. I don't think what happened in the World Cup should be something we discourage.

It's an easy mistake to make, lay off the OP for God sake!

I, for one, wouldn't say "2 players" whilst explaining the offside rule to someone who didnt know it. It makes it a tad more confusing. I'd say "1 player and the 'keeper". Although this isn't necessarily the case, it would be a good starting point. An offside decision where the keeper is behind the play is rare, and all it would take is one of these instances for the person to witness to learn that the 'keeper in my scenario can be substituted with any other player.

The stick being given to the OP here reminds me of 12 year olds sitting around in school picking on the one kid who thought GAA was better than football.

And change it to what exactly? 1 player or 3 players? Because 3 players didn't work pre 1925 and I'd guarantee that 1 player most definitely won't work as you'd just have players standing in the penalty area constantly, changing the game as a whole.

All that he assumed was that a quiet a few people would not know that that is the exact rule, he's right, a lot of people don't know the exact ruling as has been shown in the couple videos posted. No need for the op getting stick at all, some people :rolleyes:

I've been playing District League soccer for 7 years, done a couple of basic training courses, never once has this been pointed out and the article in the star was the first time I've ever seen or heard the rule explained this way. And from the video's posted, only the Ref and linesman in the world cup game appeared to be aware of it.

I was at that match. It's bad enough when a Boards.ie user doesn't know the rule, but when a referee, two assistants, a commentator and an analyst don't see it, it really is embarrassing, even if it didn't really change the result.
