Venezuela - flood your house and Hugo Chavez will let you live in his presidential palace. Also, there's a free national health care system and being a native english speaker will help you get a decent job. There's a bit of a high crime rate at the moment, but they're working on that.

Plus, if the supermarket tries to jack up the price of beer, Hugo just comes in and takes them over and drops the price again.

How about one of those Dutch territories in the Caribbean? Some have self-rule (1, 2, 3), while some are actually 'part' of the Netherlands proper.

Sint-Maarten is an absolute kip, a prime example of what happens when you let Dutch people interfere with natural beauty.

Aruba could be cool though, just saying the name reminds me of Captain Pillowcase.

Might I suggest Belize, on the Caribbean and English is the main language.

I wonder how easy it would be to get a job on some of the more obscure islands mentioned here?

And it was founded by pirates. Worth an extra 50 points surely.

    Just don't mention the hurricane.

Australia is great, but house prices, food prices will knock you back a lot.

Disagree on the house prices bit, for Perth anyway. It's all relative to your earnings and as a 25 year old earning a slightly above average salary, the prices don't scare me one bit (I'd be buying with a second income though).

Liah, you seem a tad picky tbh. If you can find so much fault with first world countries then I'm not sure what it will take to satisfy you. Nowhere's perfect afterall.

How bad is censorship in Australia? I wasn't aware of any...thought Aus was like Western Europe in most things.

Well they wanted to ban female ejaculation from porn last year so maybe that's why Liah's so upset... :pac:

Nut seriously, I'm not aware of anything really that effects my life. There was some situation back in 08 but it's not relevant to me so I'm not too sure of the details.

i kinda like the idea of the cayman islands, no tax at all, great weather, no crime and a constant supply of young good looking american tourists!! Mate of mine moved there for a 6month contract, 3 years later hes still there... the bastard

and the censorship in OZ is a big thing for me as I'm incredibly anti-censorship, what little there is here in Germany already drives me batty.

What's all this about censorship in Oz? Never really noticed it when I lived there. Although maybe that's because nobody was allowed to talk about it!:p

Are you not a journalist? Surely if there was censorship it would be very relevant to you (unless for some reason you're ruling out being a journalist in the porn industry).

9-5 I'm a bank worker but yeah I'm also a freelance journalist, however I only do sports and there's zero sensorship in that. In fact sports is quite open in terms of stories that get air time that could very easily be swept under the carpet.

I've little or no interest in politics, computer games etc so that's why it has no real impact on me.

I was thinking more along the lines of Sydney, houses 40 km from the city can rake in $400k to $600k easily. I don't disagree with you, if you have a good job with a decent salary it's manageable, otherwise it's easy to find yourself in a struggle.

Seeing a picture of the president framed and hanging up in the airport in the USA when I landed was enough to scare me :pac:

I'd suggest catalunya maybe, though it's definitely cold-ish in winter

I'm wondering why it's only really countries that have a 'real' winter that are progressive, I can think of quite a few countries I wouldn't mind living in, various places in Europe (Scandinavia, etc), Canada, etc. But they've all got fairly brutal winters.

Chances are I'll just have to suck it up and pick a country with a winter, but why are there so few, if any, countries that are warm all year round that fit the majority of those criteria?

An odd correlation, but one I'm curious about.

Decent government meaning, basic human rights, low crime rate, low corruption rate, high quality of life, low poverty, etc., and subjectively (since some people will disagree on these things being 'decent') government-regulated (or at least affordable!) healthcare and education, separation of church and state, and low censorship?

Can you tell me how France, Spain and Portugal don't fit the majority of those criteria?

Loads of cool places to live in developing countries where local politics are fine. You're never gonna find an entire country that will tick all the boxes for you.

also one that isnt really true at all, your view of what is and isnt progressive is quite skewed and you lump the entire of the united states in as one when there are the equivelant of 50 odd countries in one there, each with their own goverment, laws and political philosophies

saying that australia is progressive is ridicolous

it is clear why countries like spain and portugal etc arent quite as succesffull economically and that is because they dont have great agricultural weather so they are playing catch up to the countries who were built on farming

your views are definitely going to lead you to settle for a place that isnt what you think it is and also dosnt have the winter your looking for

For it to be a real correlation there would have to be few or no countries with brutal winters and equally brutal governments. Russia and the pack of 'stans would sink that theory. In essence you've got a small handful of countries with a similar cultural background who just happen to have cold winters and tolerable governments.

And as pointed out there are a number of Mediterranean countries who don't have crackpot dictators running them.

Spain could be an option, I've never been. But I'm not sure I would like how religious it seems to be, and the dating culture/how men typically view women doesn't appeal to me at all.. I don't think I would be particularly happy there, I guess. Isn't there a quite seedy underbelly to Spain and relatively high crime? I could just be wildly misinformed.

I wasn't aware there were parts of France that were warm all year round.. I suppose I already have a base in speaking French. Not that I like the language at all, but I suppose it's an option. Not too sure about the culture there though.

Portugal I know essentially nothing about.
