Hang on. Did you just make up that list of cities yourself?

yep, just from the top of my head

of course I am open to debate.

FWIW Ireland would be down near the bottom of any city on a global scale.

Most of the worlds so called dangerous cities are only dangerous if you are involved in gangs or go into neighborhoods that you can tell from a few miles away are shít holes. If you use common sense you could easily spend weeks in them and never experience anything other than a feeling in the air.

The dodgiest ones i've been to, and i use the word dodgy loosely, are probably:

    Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
    Mazatlán, Mexico
    Guate, Guatemala
    San Pedro Sula, Honduras
    Tegucigalpa, Honduras
    Caracas, Venezuela

Never had anything happen to me while in the above places but met loads of people that were robbed and all have a high murder rate. I've been all over Asia and Africa and i've never got the same feeling of needing to be a bit careful as i did in the above cities.

Sadly, there is a website out there somewhere where you can type in a message, and it will appear on the board the kid is holding. I've not yet managed to find what the original sign said, but it is unlikely it was about Limerick.
The fact that Limerick is on this but no mention of Baghdad just shows it is totally fuc.king retarded.

Why? Look up the violent crime rates in Baghdad on a per capita basis, then compare with Limerick.

This is data is two years old, but gets the point across.
    http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1894566,00.html
In all, deaths in Baghdad in 2008 numbered roughly 2,880, according to the database's figures. Given that Baghdad is a city of about six million that makes for a murder rate of about 48 per 100,000 people. How does that compare to other cities blighted by high levels of violence?

Let's go to the numbers: Caracas, with about 3.2 million people, is in a bloody league of its own, with an estimated murder rate of 130 per 100,000 residents according to government figures. Cape Town is about the same size as Caracas but nearer to Baghdad's murder rate with 62 violent deaths per 100,000 people. New Orleans, with an estimated post-Katrina population of just over 300,000, is tiny in size compared to its rivals. But the number of murders is huge; figures vary, but even the low estimate puts the city on a par with Cape Town. By way of comparison, Moscow, one of the most violent cities in Europe, has an estimated murder rate of just 9.6 per 100,000 residents. New York City's murder rate is 6.2, Washington D.C.'s about 32.

And the bloodletting has dropped fairly dramatically over the last two years in Baghdad.

The suicide bombs make international news, but the non-terroritst activities are surprisingly low.

    NTM

Baghdad is dangerous for totally different reasons anyways. It's quite obvious there will be danger in a war. It's like adding Germany or France to the list in the 40's.

I thought Lima was worse than Guatemala City tbh. I suppose its all about what areas you go to

Wonderfully researched piece of journalism there with its 'at least 20 South American countries and typos every three words. This gem is the highlight:
Speaking the local language and knowing a little about fighting is a good idea, just in case.

I live in Cape Town, the city itself is very safe for the most part. If you go wandering out into the townships on a dark night it's not very safe, but that's the case for virtually every city in south America and Asia too.

Also you do know that Papua New Guinea isn't actually in Africa

Lucky lucky feker. I love Cape Town, just back from 3 week holiday there. Thats my 4th visit in 4 years and I agree its not at all a dangerous city as a whole. In fact I have felt more at risk in Dublin city center.

St Louis, Missouri is the most dangerous city in the US apparently.

I'd stick in Moscow, Grozny, Philadelphia, Medellin, any African city aswell.

Btw, Limerick would DEFINITELY be in the top 10! Sure isn't Ireland also the fattest, laziest, most impoverished nation in the entire world!?

Eh yeah, that's why there are thousands of Limerick folks streaming as refugees to safer climes like, eh Baghdad and Kabul, which don;t seem to appear on that list.

i think the results are based on inhabitant's lack of etiquette as opposed to visitors or invaders

if the yanks gain a foothold proper it'll be right up there with other americanized ghettos

You know Papua New Guinea is in Australasia, right? You're not a complete imbecile, I take it?

I know that, and as for being an imbecile when a finger points, there are always three pointing back.

Don't think Rio and Mexico City have been mentioned.

Rio has known to have the gang wars come down to the tourist areas of the city.

Mexico City have the kidnapping taxi's where they lock you in and make you withdraw all your cash at an ATM before releasing you (if your lucky)

St Petersburg used to be pretty bad with knife muggings on tourists. Duno what it's like now.

Detroit, Jo'burg, Lagos and Port Moresby, San Salvador probably too.

That Gangs series with Ross Kemp is an eye opener.

Was just in Lagos last week, felt fairly vulnerable. Saying that though, most Nigerians are extremely friendly.
You certainly don't want to find yourself in the wrong areas in Rio.

I could probably count the number of countries in South America to the nearest 10 and I'd say it's a safe bet that I've been in more of the places he's cobbled together soundbites from the internet about.

    Quito? Harmless place.

Absolute and utter dump. I've never seen so much litter and grafitti. But generally it didn't feel that dangerous.

Were you here for that week when it was 35+ virtually every day, that was a nightmare, too hot to do anything, even the water in the pool was warm ;)

I've had more trouble in both London and Dublin than I have had in all my time living and as a regular visitor to Cape Town.
