which Octavia engine to go for

    Hi FOlks,

I am looking at scrapping my VW polo and getting a Skoda Octavia however am not sure about which engine to go for.

I am tempted by the 1.2 tsi petrol (105bhp) as its the cheapest obviously.

My yearly mileage would probably be less than 10,000 between 8-9000 i reckon...mostly driving around Dublin, with the odd trip outside for the weekend every couple of weeks, most of which would be on Motorway

I am worried about if the 1.2 tsi will be powerful enough for a car this big, note I am looking for a family car here, so I won't be haring around the place all the time, but one of the things I don't like about my current 60bhp polo is that overtaking slow trucks or cars in it is pretty hairy, and driving on the motorway at 120km/h aint that comfortable.

Other options are the 1.4 tsi petrol (120bhp) and the 1.6 tdi (105bhp), the 1.4 petrol is about 1,500 euro more expensive to buy and moves me into the next tax band which is something I was looking to avoid, and the 1.6 tdi is roughly 3,000 more expensive.

I had a test drive in the 1.2 and it seemed nippy enough but I didn't really get to stretch it as traffic was really bad. Hoping to take it out again.

Seeing as all these engines are used across the VW range I was wondering if anybody has much experience with them and can offer an opinion?

    Cheers

Diesel if you wanna be able to sell it again. There's a 10 reg ambiente 1.2 on donedeal if you wanna save some dosh

Personally I think its an overly complicated engine with no real advantage over a proper vvt 1.4 petrol engine.

    Thanks for the reply.

Just as a matter of interest...why would the 1.6 diesel be a better resale bet?
Also performance wise would this have the same characteristics as the 1.2 petrol (given they have the same bhp).

Had a look at those 2010 1.2 octavias...scrappage deal on a new one is cheaper.

    Thanks

And now that the greens are out the new government might change all of that again ;)
    @ OP
    Go for the 1.6 diesel
    economy
    Low tax band

The 1.2 is low tax too to be fair.
