I'm just curious to know does this happen in Ireland or is it just an urban legend, anyone know of someone who has had their car "stolen" for the insurance cheque.

if you can think of it then someone else has done it. i doubt anyone is gonna own up to it here though, that'd be stupid.

It is happening all the time. Some people with big car loans out that cannot pay them use it to claim the money and pay the loan off. Most insurance companies have a forensic examiners working with them now checking out burned vehicles.

Ha, I heard a tale of insurance companies counter acting that by instead of paying out on the stolen car they simply give the owner another car almost identical to the one stolen. :D

I've heard stories of people going away on holiday and coming back to find their car was 'stolen and burnt out'.
