If I've a reservation on Irish rail, can I get an earlier commuter railcar to do the same trip with the same ticket?

It's a lower standard of service and I'll have no guarantee of a seat.

You can, but you need to have the ticket endorsed at the ticket office. Of course, you lose your reservation.

would it be the same price? or would I have to pay a surcharge?

You may have to pay a surcharge.

Hi, sorry. If the fare on the train you want to travel on is the same or cheaper, there should be no charge.

If the fare on the train you want to travel on is more expensive (possible if reservation isn't possible), there is a magical calculation that Irish Rail haven't released to calculate the surcharge.
