    Green White and Gold

thems the colours of the flag.

I have heard a lot of people say, but I have also heard that some of the more strict catholic schools (the same ones that wouldn't let pupils play soccer or lutherian football) taught that the flag was gold to deny the existence of protestants in the state.

    Tis all very confusing.

    Green - 'Ra

    White - neutral gay, hand-wringing do-gooders

    Orange - Huns

    [Rant]

Every single goddammed time there is a discussion about Ireland/the state of Ireland (as in the entity) or something relating to Irish people, it always, always, always ends up as Prodestants v Catholics. Christ on a fcuking bike - get over it and move the shag on. I'm as nationalist as the next person but this thread is about "Marketing the tri-colour" - not on "What the tri-colour stands for and the entire rehashed history of this nation". Not to back seat mod but I'm sure people are getting sick of others derailing threads by harking on with the same old shite each time.

    [/Rant]

In relation to OP's question, I don't know why it isn't better marketed. The Union Jack is synonymous with fashion in some repects and the US flag and Russian/Cuba flags are used quite widely. It'd be cool to see the tri-colour used more often but maybe it's just that it's too boring a flag?

    THIS

The reason for starting the thread, is we're entering a new era of Ireland. We're hopefully clearing out the old & starting fresh (idealist much??). However, this tarnished old fashioned emblem has very little respect. It needs to be marketed in order to revitalise it & the very country it symbolises.

Here's something I knocked together in 10 minutes, I'm not a design student & didn't put too much thought into it.
    Flag.jpg
I'm not sure what the exact colour palette is supposed to be (although I think it should be modified). I've taken the stripes & turned them sideways & added a triskelion as a symbol of our heritage (it also represents the past, the present & the future). It probably resembles some African dictatorship's flag - irony huh?

Would be interested in seeing other's redesigns also.

I believe (& this might be a bit serious for after hours) that by revitalising the flag & the national anthem (we're not mad about the soldiers of destiny anymore, right?). while keeping the fundamental beliefs & basis of them, and by getting this through to the younger generations, that this is something to be proud of & dare I say it "cool"/"trendy" (by saying it, I've probably negated it, but anyhoo), that we have a very real chance of being a country to be proud of again.

Why would we need to market our flag exactly...it's just a flag not some corporate advertising campaign

And the harp on the original flag came from Brian Boru's harp, the high king of Ireland, who represented the four kingdoms of Ireland, unfortunately POLLITICALLY there are only three kingdoms within the republic so using that flag would not be possible i think.

Im sure it will again some time in the future

But Brian boru never conquered Ulster, the O'Neils held out so it could still be used. Personally I much prefer the harp on the green background. Or a big picture of Ronnie Drew havin a pint

I agree that the flag and anthem could be revamped to be more relevant but we don't need to market it...it's a national flag not a corporate logo

But it's the marketing of it which makes it more relevent & accessable to youth markets.

A revamp & (respectful) use of it in popular culture would make it into a more desireable property & hopefully build national confidence in Ireland as a brand & nationality.

When a company has bad press/scandals/goes broke, they frequently rebrand & revive themselves, why can the same not be done for Ireland.

Even the Irish air corp logo on a plain white background would be far more iconic than our current flag.

But my point is that Ireland is not a brand. This is merely reducing the whole country to commodity, which it's not.

I agree we could use a new flag but to do so as a marketing ploy to improve our brand image isn't the reason it should happen. Ireland's not a brand, nor should it be thought of in that way imo

Yeah O'carrols have already done that.

To be honest if you want to market the tricolour or some other Irish symbol you need to start at home.

Stop promoting the goddamned leprechaun as a national symbol. Try banshee instead, or the dulahan, those guys are properly cool

Burn all green hats with attachable red beards. In fact just burn down O'Carrols full stop. If you want to sell the logo or the flag in this case you need to make sure what it represents is worth buying..is cool.

The Union flag is associated with swinging london, the US flag with new york amongst other things so its easier to sell. The confederate flag is not quite so easy despite being from the same country.

Ireland is a pretty good place with a lot of cool stuff to promote itself, its music, literature, history, archaeology, mythology etc but instead we choose to promote the crapest aspects of it and end up with a leprechaun museum

Yeah I think the flag becomes more associated with the place rather than the other way round. As you say US flag with New York etc....

In season one of Skins, the character Chris had a jacket that had all the flags of the world on it. Can't find a pic but that was a seriously awesome jacket and I really wish I could find one for myself. :(

And I'd agree with what others said; that the flag isn't really as marketable as others because of that whole unfortunate "UP THE RA" connotation. It's a shame, because I really like our flag.

Which is actually a museum of Folklore, Mythology and Storytelling.

Don't follow the discussions then. Don't like something being said? Bring something to the discussion and debate it. There is lots of discussion on this forum regarding politics, religion and sometimes both put together.

It may be celebrated on the 5th and 6th of March but in 1848 the flag had then moved to Clonmel. It was first unfurled on a flagpole on the 1st March in Waterford.

Gah I would hate to see our flag marketed. Whenever we go to spain (for example) you see people everywhere wearing union jacks on tee-shirts, shorts, bikini's, towels every f-ing where. Its so gross and tacky and shows no respect for your flag imo:rolleyes:
