I'm not great at mental arithmatic, but €1,500 to fix the injector is significantly less than €23,000 to change the car.

Neither am i,BUT there are 3 other injectors every one is 1500 (part only) If one goes its only starting the ****e:mad:
160k on the clock does not help things;)
trade value of 7k starts to make the alarm bells ring:eek:
Do the sums now,buy someone elses trouble for 15k and keep paying or bite the bullet........sometimes them bullets are not too sour;)

How the hell can they charge 1500 for an injector?

Surely the independant trade have a cheaper fix than that? Can use ones be fitted?

That is independant trade, you cant buy an injector Bosch /Siemens without giving them the old one, they cant be "serviced" its a fdcker for sure, something to do with the 2l engine hence my reason for the more serviceable 1.6 option.

How can you even contemplate paying €23k on another Passat after getting burnt on your current one? Buy something else.

Just looking on vw parts system, im not sure of which part exactly suits yours but for most of the injectors for diesel 06 passat, there are repair kits, seal kits & cleaning solution kits listed. These are genuine items which woud be available through the dealers so there must be a certain amount of serviceability although I do know that injectors are specialist precision items.

1500 seems very high, I'd try a few garages to see if you can find used ones.
7k trade in value is fairly crap. Try VW dealer in Longford, also Portumna. Both of those seem to be giving good deals recently.

This just shows how much indoctrination there is of certain brands in Ireland.

Between VW and Toyota, there are few buyers/owners that are so blind. It's like devotion to Fianna Fáil or something - absolute madness.

Is it any wonder VW produces such rubbish cars when people have expensive problems with them yet go and buy another one? This lack of effort to make cars reliable is also evident with modern BMWs and Mercs for nearly 15 years (thankfully Mercs are now properly made once again), it never fails to amaze me the power of a badge.

CS, which alternatives would you suggest?

The problem with this question is that there is such a list of better alternatives:)!

Ironically I like the Skoda Superb a lot because it is based on a Passat that is better in every way bar looks, and having had the benefit of seeing the "new" Passat today (which of course is exactly the same car as the B6 apart from the looks and a few interior changes) it's uglier than its predcessor so it's not really a better looking car than its Skoda counterpart anymore. It's also meant to be quite a bit more reliable than the VW, now I don't know why or how, but it seems that the Czechs take more pride in their work than their bosses in Germany.

Mondeo, Insignia, Superb are IMO the best cars in the class. The C5 and even the Accord now looks like a decent proposition - I believe that Honda are about to drop the prices across the range which will make the Accord competitive once again. Also worth considering are the Mazda 6 (if you can live with the interior)

The new Peugeot 508 is shaping up to be a decent car too - Autocar were very impressed with it today, especially with how it drives(they're even sticking with hydraulic power steering to improve steering feel - a commendable decision) - one is left with the impression that Peugeot are going back to their 80s heyday when they made cars that were the "drive of your life". Another car that could be very good is the Hyundai i40 - apparently the i30 is a good proposition and they are meant to be on a roll these days.

I'd still have the Passat over the Seat Exeo, the Toyota Avensis (that's some heap of brown stuff - I really dislike the current model Avensis - that really is a car for people who lack the ability to think for themselves), the Hyundai Sonata(if that's still sold) or the outgoing Peugeot 407, which is not a particularly good car.

My problem with the Passat is that while it's not a bad car, it's just that it is not well made and VW makes a car that is better equipped, better made, feels far classier inside, has more space and yet costs less. I also hate the fact that VW are passing this car off as a new one when it is really a facelift.
