Given Cowens intentions to cling to power, should we adopt the change model from Tunis
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12200851 and put Ireland in for Arabs/Tunis corruption/ happiness

Amazed he's going for it. Cowen surely thinks he has the numbers.

Apparently Martin is resigning and voting against Cowen.

EDIT: I think it is pretty much confirmed that he is resigning now.

He thought he had the numbers before somebody stood up.

What would be even better now would be if Lenny or Hanafin had a go, split the bastards even further ;)

Yeah could be it but he said Cowen was aware that he was going public this evening.

I wonder will we get another brave skin stepping up tonight?

Why couldn't he have done this a year or 2 ago?

Publicity stunt to get votes, that's all it is.

Confirmed: Micheál Martin has offered his resignation to the Taoiseach. He is voting with accordance to his views in the Motion of Confidence in the Taoiseach.

Edit: However Cowen refuses Martin's resignation

If there is a god in heaven the decimation of the FF party will be on Michael Martins watch

What a joke and a disgrace. The country is on the floor and these morons are fighting over a bag of crumbs. Fianna Fail is dead. Get the F off the stage and let's have an election right now. I am sick to death of you pontificating about 'putting the interests of the country first', the only interests you bastards have is yourselves. GTFO now!!.

It would be nice but as long as there are rats who will vote for other rats we're going to be overrun with rats. Someone mentioned in one of the other Biffo threads that giant man-shaped rat Brian Cowen is very popular in Offaly amongst his own rat kind. I hate to say it but I really don't see any hope.

agreed...but given the gullibility of a lot of people...the rat will abandon ship and will reappear when the dust has settled....all will be forgiven....the prick

    Micheál Martin's full statement:

    http://www.politics.ie/3391442-post225.html

Throughout my time as a government minister I have always given the Taoiseach my views in an honest and open way. This has been no different over the last week during which we have talked candidly and in private on a number of occasions.

I believe that Fianna Fáil must recognise the reality of the current climate of public opinion. My concern is that we be able to put forward a positive agenda, campaign with energy and engage the public.

I have reluctantly concluded that, in these circumstances, Fianna Fáil should change its leader before the election and I have informed the Taoiseach of this view. Having talked to most members of the Parliamentary Party and many members of the party across the country I believe that this is a widely held view.

I want to be clear that there is no question about who should continue to head the government. The government has a short agenda to complete before the General Election. This involves delivering a number of specific reform commitments and providing for the final implementation of this year’s budget. This work is essential to ensure that there can be more constructive debate during the election and that there is time for the orderly process of government formation.

I welcome the decision of the Taoiseach to table a vote of confidence in himself at next Tuesday’s Parliamentary Party meeting. I will, in accordance with my views, be voting against the motion of confidence.

In these circumstances, I have offered my resignation to the Taoiseach. He has indicated that he believes such a course of action is not necessary.

Plus, with all the looting going on you're sure to bag a nice new telly, and that PS3 you've been after.

At the next election there will be an opportunity to let them fear the people. Like there always has been.

    Cowards the lot of them!

Martin - if you had any balls you would have done this six or twelve months ago, not 10 weeks before a bloody general election.

First Bertie jumped ship when/before the inevitable was about to happen. Then we get half the current cabinet resigning after screwing up this country for the years to come - some of the highest paid politicians in the world, but they had to go to Brussels seeking a bailout. They'll leave with their huge pensions though. Absolute cowards!!

Ireland, a highly skilled english speaking workforce, part of the EU, with a population of only 4 million people - where some of the biggest US multinationals came - but we some how managed to fúck it all up. Billions in debt and unemployment at 13%. Incredible really.

That's Fianna Fail for you. Fail by name fail by nature.

That's a lot of faith to be placing in the the "democratic" process. The election is a long time coming. As I recall one reason for this is that there are two by-elections prevented to this point with a third having required court action to bring about. The previous "leader" should be in gaol or at least fighting to stay out of it, and the current - who operates without popular mandate - seems increasingly to be just as dirty where he previously appeared simply stupid. What exactly do they fear? Early retirement and multiple pensions?

Lets not forget the Grrens response to all of this.

Green Party reaction to Cowen's statement:

Party anticipates early and definitive resolution

Green Party TDs and senators this evening discussed Brian Cowen's response to the internal Fianna Fail party consultations.

The Green Party has stood back to allow Fianna Fail to order its own affairs. We look forward to an early and definitive resolution.

Please Greens, just pull the plug!!!
