    Tragic
    A 9yr old, christ

I hope this is not a major escalation of the division that is occuring in the US... he sounds like a schizo or sth to me tho... but then again there are plenty of seemingly normal people with crazy [politcal] views

According to RTE there were 6 killed and 12 shot. He would definitely get life even here!

He'll get the death sentance regardless if the Congresswoman dies

    Shocking stuff.

    He's a complete nutcase.
One of his reasons for doing this is actually grammarnazi-esque. Giving out about the poor grammar of the people in District 8 where he lives. It's kinda ironic that he has a poor command of English. Even the Fox news correspondent was making fun of him because of it.

I find it weird that they were able to arrest him though and the cops or whoever just didn't shoot him. Surely there'd be cops keeping order at a Congresswoman's gathering at a shopping center.

It wasn't tragic till I heard about the 9 year old.

In the US every headline is either about the congresswoman being shot or the federal judge that was killed, some with pics and bios. The nine year old is mentioned almost as an afterthought. You'd think the murder of a little girl would be THE headline; an innocent child ffs, but no, it's all about politics.

Just two weeks ago, this little girl was enjoying her Christmas presents and now her parents have to bury her. It's early in the New Year and already I'm shaking my head at the senselessness of it all.

Of course I feel terrible for all impacted by this tragedy and hopefully the congresswoman will pull through. But the media should show some respect to the other victims and not make this tragedy only about the congresswoman and the judge.

    He should be put down.

Innocent kids are killed every day of the week around the world, if the media were to make headline news out of every murdered child then there wouldn't be much time to report anything else. The fact is that the judge and the congressman are the story and rightly so.

    Christina Taylor Greene

It also lists the other people who were murdered. RIP all.

It's by a strange coincidence this little girl was born on a day that shook America to it's core; September 11, 2001.

Sad news but as someone else said It's realy not a huge suprise. The anger I have seen surrounding politicans at the moment is palpable.Though the fact members of the public were shot highlights a more serious agenda. It will be interesting to find out a bit more about his motives and his background re his army career.

How those people are allowed to function is beyond any reasonable persons comprehension.

As far as I know, no, because of that God awful "freedom of speech" bollox they've got written into their constitution. I'd love to go back in time and tell those forefather bastards just what that constitution is causing - countless school shootings, murders and accidental deaths, and people like Westboro Baptist Church doing all the sh1t.

    Zeo!

According the site below, there are 579 "Loughner" in the US and only one Jared Loughner.

    11 of me!

Weird how it was all conflicting about reports of her death.

His youtube channel is interesting. He keeps referring to himself in the third person. I can't get my head around much of the text in the videos but it would lead me to believe he's working by himself, not as a disgruntled party member.

    Some quotes from his videos:
    I define terrorist
I can't trust the current government because of the ratifications: The government is implying (sic) mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling the grammar.
Honestly, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Guns are pretty freely available in the States.

Edit: This picture of Loughner is doing the rounds. Weird to think he was featured in the paper for doing charity work in the community and is now featured for destroying that community.

From looking at the youtube videos...the guy is just nuts. That's all there is to it. Can't see any tea-party stuff or anything like that, just plain nuts.

He makes random statements and backs it up with weird logic that has to have come from someone with severe mental problems. His sentences read like maths equations.

You can't spell slaughter without laughter

I reserve the right to quote this post after the election....

Hope the congresswoman and the rest that were shot make full recoveries. If the shooter isn't found to be insane then I hope he gets the death penalty.

While I see what you're saying, this wasn't just any death of a child, this was at a public event, at the hands of a nutcase with an axe to grind against a politican at said event. Do I really have to read through to the third or fourth paragraph of a news article before I find out that a child was also a victim? Have we become so hardened to the tragedies in the world that nobody considers the shocking death of a child worthy of a headline or at least of the first paragraph? IMO, this child's life was just as valuable as the congresswoman and the judge's, and she and her family deserve better than being a throwaway line in a news item. So do the other victims.

Anyway, as it turns out, the little girl's grandad was a famous coach, plus she was born on 9/11 so maybe that'll earn her more headlines. /sarc

Anyone can get access to a gun over in the States, it's more likely to be a disgruntled native.
Sure I spent 3 months over there and completed an NRA course in basic pistol, which would've let me apply for "concealed carry" of a gun in Virginia/Washington DC, Ie. carry a gun on my person in daily life.

    AZ Gun Control Laws: http://crime.about.com/od/gunlawsbystate/p/gunlaws_az.htm

They're some of the most relaxed controls in the Union. I'm sure there will likely be a beef-up in the wake of this thing. Don't however hold you breath thinking guns will be banned any time soon. Regulation in these more conservative places however will gradually step up to a better standard. The fact that a properly licensed and permitted person can conceal a firearm doesn't bother me greatly: those are typically not the ones committing crimes. Rather, they're often the ones shooting convenience store robbers in the back, from the milk aisle.

Generally I'm completely against the death penalty but this kind of thing is different. For once I see it as important that the state should be able to "send a message". Obviously the bit in inverted commas will be jumped on. :pac:
I wouldn't advocate frying anyone though.
    A strange stance indeed.

You have to appreciate that the Death Penalty doesn't typically serve as a deterrent in these situations. Jared Lee could have very well been prepared to die after his shooting. In fact, many shootings over the years, including Columbine and many others, ended when the shooters took their own lives. What good is a Death Penalty to those people? I would think the thought of living in a cold plain cell for the rest of his biological life will be enough pause for this young man.

The WBC is never worth anybody's time. Except that I have few doubts they are being monitored. They themselves would never do such a thing, they just like applauding it. They're entitled to do so, just as Atheists are entitled to billboards and pundits are entitled to take offense to them and claim that Tides are inexplicable phenomena that are the work of God. Oh, Bill.

Given the tone of that video and this press release, I think it's a safe bet they'll be there.

Video of Jared Lee Loughner talking in this link. All the other videos on youtube it was just his written thoughts. I thought it was interesting to hear his ramblings in person.

What's he saying about being homeless and teachers being paid illegally?

Aye, didn't have my thinking cap on when I said that, I'd say death was probably what he was expecting.

He was being disruptive in class at the college and his parents were called in about it. I'm guessing they may have threatened to throw him out of their house because of it. He goes on about the currency being illegal so that's probably what he means by the teachers being paid illegally.

It's amusing to see people attempt to extract coherent logic out of his ramblings.
