Had a Sky salesman call last week. He explained that the ''system'' will change over to digital soon and I'll no longer be able to use the analogue service. When I explained to him I'm just about to upgrade the tele to a freeview receiver he got a bee in his bonnet and insisted that I needed Sky!

This is of course a con. Feckers!.

It's just a sales technique albeit a dishonest one, well done on not falling for it.

When getting your new TV/STB make sure it does MPEG4, in general Freeview TV/STB's don't so you are best getting a Saorview certified TV/STB's or a FreeviewHD TV/STB's which should be compatible. Review the terrestrial forum for more details on compatible TV's http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=56

All here including answer to that guy http://www.saortv.info/
Do I need a new TV?

No. If your TV has SCART or HDMI connector you can use a separate Add On Set-Box. If your TV only has an aerial connection (very rare as most have SCART and all HDTV, Full HD and HD Ready TV have HDMI), then you can use the SCART and RF out on an old VHS Tape casssette recorder to connect the setbox.
    ...
    Pay TV
Only Analogue TV via an aerial is affected. Pay TV, UPC (formerly NTL and Chorus), Casey, Magnet or Sky is not affected. By 2012 they may even have the extra channels or HDTV versions of Irish TV. UPC may phase out Analogue Cable TV, but that is nothing to do with ASO or Digital TV rollout. That will be to make the cable system more efficient. Already they offer more channels for lower price on Digital than Analogue Cable. The Analogue Switch Off at end of 2012 is not a reason to get Pay TV.

    Also from http://www.saortv.info/about/faq/
Is there any need to get UPC or Sky Subscription? No. Only subscribe to pay TV if you had decided to do that anyway.

Very dishonest on the salesmans part-gives guy's that do the job properly a bad name.Anybody worth their salt would know their stuff about the business.I can suss out the spoofers in seconds. We had guys from Dublin selling Sky down my way who told people that the UPC analogue was being switched off and they'd have to join Sky.
No harm in telling the truth, people talk and if you spoof and rip people off it's bye bye.
