    So, my well intentioned friend, it would make no difference if he were - to quote the OP - in an "Astra"
    Boom. Mind = blown.

    And Mercedes contribute petrol, tyres, insurance and tax?

    Again, how will that change with an Astra?

    The car is free. The driver, however, is not. The one in Galway has a contract worth 50k per annum.

    The reg plate is automatically booked in Dublin, Cork and Limerick whether it is ever assigned to a car.

    Anybody is entitled to pre-book *any* reg number they want in their county of residence (bar xx-D-1, xx-C-1, xx-L-1) through a lottery every November. Reason other cities (and indeed counties) don't preserve the '1' is cos they have Mayors as opposed to Lord Mayors.

    So if the car is free and the driver is not, why don't they ditch the driver and get the mayor to drive the merc?

    And as for the 'lord mayor', Dublin had, as a matter of indisputable fact, a 'mayor' for centuries before somebody decided to call him a 'lord mayor'. Time to reduce the pomposity in this republic and eliminate this royalist cult 'lord' business.

    Isn't Mercedes already a hearse?
    Huh! One brand to be ridden twice :confused:
    Get them a Prius or something, be Eco-friendly.

    There are no words to use to describe that post.Google ''running costs'' for yourself and you might understand.

    Wasn't it a Volvo at one stage?

    Think it depends on the mayor which brand they use. They had Renaults for a while. It was a couple of Vel Satis' and an Espace.l

    My Uncle was Lord Mayor a few years ago and they get to pick there Car.. He was sick of them picking the big cars so he picked Renault Scenic.

    Thats bull I'm afraid. No Lord Mayor of Dublin has ever had a Renault Scenic, only Renaults that there has been is 3x Vel Satis and a Espace. The Lord Mayor does not "pick" a car of their choice, its dependent on what dealership offers a car!

    Just a point of information, and I know that's really really boring.

    BUT.

    The Lord Mayor doesn't necessarily get a new Merc every year. It's completely up to the individual what sort of car he gets. It would be interesting to see what sort of cars are chosen per Mayor on a party basis.

    I imagine it would be:

    FF: Mercedes;
    FG: Lexus (fukkin yawn);
    (ex-)PD: Bugatti;
    Labour: Ford Focus;
    Green: Prius (saw John Gormley in one of these at Abbeyleix Topaz);
    SF: Renault 4;
    Socialist Party: Volkswagen;
    Workers' Party: Daewoo Llanos;
    Communist Party: Pyeonghwa Junma;
    Independents: Can't be lord Mayor, soz.

    The car is not bought at taxpayer's expense - it is supplied free of charge by Mercedes.

    IMHO, your post is only a "ceremonial one", and you should get a grip. Controlling public spending is a laudable pursuit but posts that are purely for the sake of stirring resentment should be classified as trolling. IMHO.

    I'm not trolling, you are.

    PS. Where can I get a free Mercedes? :confused:

    He isnt trolling neither are you btw. He told the facts and people are still ranting about it.

    I don't need to google anything. I've owned BMWs and they are much cheaper to run than ****ty cars like Astras that need to be serviced all the time.

    Genuinely my Porsche is the same price to run as my VW daily driver.

    I don't buy into this anti-german hype about "running costs"

    Eh, Opel are German

    I dont believe that the running costs of an Astra would be more then that of a BMW. You get better MPG in an astra, and the servicing cost would be cheaper. Personally, I think the mayor should be allowed have the Merc as it is free, but he should have to drive it himself

    If you consider the GM Delta platform "German" then I guess so.

    I don't really consider Opels German anymore (well until they stop using crappy GM parts at least)

    My point is once you factor in all the expenses overall, I doubt that the Mercedes is substantially more expensive to operate than an Astra would be.

    Just meant that they are tradtionally a German brand, I have no idea what way they are now owned

    So what other expences are you referring to? Tax, insurance, fuel and servicing, tyres etc are all cheaper for an Astra?

    So, according to a thread on the motors forum, the Lord Mayor gets a brand new fancy Merc with the reg plate 11-D-11. MSL Motors of Ballsbridge sponsored the car and they also paid the €1000 fee for the special registration number.

    What a waste of money. :mad:

    Why does the Lord Mayor need a brand new car every year?

    If MSL Motors want to give away free cars to people, then there are plenty of more worthy candidates than the Lord Mayor of Dublin (who is a nobody). :mad:

    Most Opel parts are more expensive than Mercedes or BMW parts, check out the price of the basic front bumper for an Astra diesel, 644 euros plus vat before it's even painted or fitted. In fact i'd say Opel parts prices are among the most expensive across the board.

    there should be no such thing as cars for mayors or TDs or any of that kind of sh!te. they should use their own cars and drive them themselves simple as that. pure waste of money and cars are perks that are totally unnessessary.

    Can you imagine the expenses though if you had some clown like Ivor Calley as mayor? Probably cost a couple of thousand to cross the city. To be honest I don't think we even need mayors or a president unless they want to do it for free, a total waste of taxpayers money in my view.

    Totally agree with you.

    The fact that 3 times it has been stated that the car is supplied for free by Mercedes and people are still going "herp derp waste of taxpayers money" is ridiculous. (not to mention 1/2 of AH aren't taxpayers since they're all 12 and/or on the effing dole) :rolleyes:

    I think its disgraceful Joe (even though I'm not on the dole, twelve years old or paying tax).:P

    I have no idea of the cost of an Astra front bumper tbh, but Il take your word for it. The point was however, that a smaller car such as an astra, golf or almera etc would be cheaper to run than a Merc or BMW
