The process for getting a gun in Ireland is ridiculous. You buy the gun all the accessories, and then you get your licence later.

However you cannot take posession of a firearm or ammunition until the licence has been issued and there is a nine page application form requireing two referees and the name (s) of your doctor. There are also stringent security conditions and, of course, an intervue with the local superintendent. It is in fact very difficult to get a firearm here unless your are a drug dealer or paramilitary, who by their nature dont bother with licences.

She's still alive - reports of her death were incorrect. Wow, big blunder there from the news agencies.

You haev to know the right wing gun culture here and the kind of person palin appeals to.

We're not "creaming" ourselves, we're in fcuking shock, you ****.

Edited: To erase pointed personal insult.

I see Twitter, FB etc. alive with calls that Palin answer for this. Without the slightest bit of info as to why it happened. The woman had a strong pro-choice past too...

See that she may be alive. Good news (hopefully)

It's quite excruciating watching Fox, not once have they mentioned her vote for ACA and how she he in favour of immigration reform. It's barely noted that she is a Democrat either.

More evidence that Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

Including on the economic side? Good to know.

I've gone through the process, it is incredibly easy. The only part people usually find bothersome is the security requirement that prevents theft of the gun.

If you're 16 and you live in the countryside and you want a gun, you can get it. Talking about an interview with the local superintendant or the name of your GP are formalities, I'm not sure the GP is even legally bound to advise the Gardai on your medical history if it is relevant. It is very easy to obtain a gun in Ireland.

Watch the video at the bottom. Fair play to her, she declared she was not afraid despite the vandalism of her office and the timing.

"U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ provision to ensure that tunneling under the Arizona-Mexico border is criminalized is expected to win approval tonight by the House of Representatives.

The Consolidated Appropriations bill also includes more than $17 million in funding Giffords requested for 17 projects throughout Southeastern Arizona.

“Tunnels are a serious threat to border security, and those who dig them must be punished,” said Giffords, whose district includes a 114-mile border with Mexico. “We must arrest and prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and that is exactly what my legislation demands.”

A short while ago, Wikipedia had her dates as June 8, 1970 - January 8 2011. Now they have had to change it back to birth date only. How utterly insensitive and misinformed the person is who is 'updating' Wiki on this! What is it that drives people to rush in to try and be first with the 'news'??

I sincerely hope she survives. This is savage behaviour.

The boards.ie politics forum is actually a good place to ask this question.

As this seems to be the goal of a few posters on this forum

    Your point?

We are talking about someone who has been shot, y'know, a life.

Also, there are reports of up to 11 other 'casualties'.

Therefore, once again, I ask what is your point?

Some major backtracking going on by the news channels now.

A lot of news agencies were reporting that she'd died earlier, the wikipedia page updated after this, then about 15-20 minutes later the hospital corrected them, it was actually the news websites trying to be there first rather than getting official confirmation.

    I condemn this attack.

    However I can't say that I'm surprised.

People are disenfranchised from the political system, and politicians appear unnacountable to anybody but themselves.

Is it any wonder that someone (wrongly) took the law into their own hands?

    Your point?

We are talking about someone who has been shot, y'know, a life.

People have been speculating about whether or not it's related to the Tea Party (including myself admittedly, with the image I posted earlier).
He's offering another reasonable motive for the act.

We are indeed talking about someone who's been shot, but when it happens to someone in her position the motives of the act are also very important.

They may catch the would be assassin for this but they will never tackle the root cause. Wingnuts in the Republican party, tea-partiers, idiots like Palin, Beck and organisations like Fox. Be interesting to see them express fake sympathy over this when they should be accepting partial blame.

This picture is going around Twitter alot atm:

    scaled.php?tn=0&server=617&filename=p7w.png&xsize=640&ysize=640

Jesse Kelly ran against this Rep. in last years election.

I'd say they were using her face as target practice on the gun range.

The same website where I saw they had Amy Winehouse and Marilyn Manson in the recent deaths section in the last few years.

Certainly not an entirely reliable source.

CNN now saying she's "shot" as oppossed to dead as earlier. One would think the thing to do would be to go with the least final first....Anyhoo, theres a conference due at the hospital in a few minutes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,008 ✭✭✭The Raven.

Wiki has changed the story again:
Gabrielle Giffords (born June 8, 1970 died January 8 2011)...

On January 8, 2011, she was shot while attending a public event in Tucson, Arizona. She is said to be in "critical" condition and in surgery.

Conflicting statements! The Wiki article should be locked altogether until the facts are established.

I used to think easy access to guns was the problem but I changed my opinion and think that the bigger problem is the attitude of some Americans that you should have a gun (and types and numbers of guns that go beyond self-defense/hunting/recreation) because it is your right and not because of any actual need to have a gun.

The gunman could be a registered Democrat for all you or I know! Stop being an utter partisan tool in a thread like this!

I highly doubt this will be a registered democrat, I doubt very much you believe that yourself.

Well it is their 2nd amendment right to have a gun.

Someone in the crowd shot back, the fact that the assailant is in custody rather than hospital doesn't make me full of hope that he got him.

Good point. It is far to early to point fingers yet.

I still think it is worth pointing out that many have warned that anti government rhetoric could be dangerous
Bill Clinton wrote in the new york times about the lessons of the Oklahoma City bombing
Civic virtue can include harsh criticism, protest, even civil disobedience. But not violence or its advocacy, ... In the current climate, with so many threats against the president, members of Congress and other public servants, we owe it to the victims of Oklahoma City, and those who survived and responded so bravely, not to cross it again.

But like you pointed out it is far to early for this case to be used as evidence.

The Wiki page is now changed again and 'protected from editing because there is significant confusion as to whether Gabrielle Giffords has died or not. "Reliable" sources have reported that she has died but have generally now retracted those statements. Wikipedia editors are closely following the developing news story and will update this page as information becomes available..'
