    Just noticed this....
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.
The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.
Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said.
The suspect was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody. He was not injured

That's absolutely shocking. If the attacker has anything to do with the Tea Party or fringe conservative movements, then the fears expressed by many about the potential consequences of the stoking of animosity and hate by right wing Republicans will have been confirmed. I hope she recovers and nobody else is seriously injured.

On Sky News now. She was shot at point blank range while speaking at a public meeting. Her condition isn't known.

    What a disgusting comment 'einhard'.
What is your position going to be if it is a rabid leftist moonbat, or better yet, an illegal alien?

I pray Giffords survives this terrible attack no matter who did it.

God help anyone on palin's "target" list huh?

Maybe the "tea" party will realise that this is the future if they continue appealing to the lowest common denominator.

    I hope fcuking palins happy.

Parties here, there and everywhere use terms like 'target' and other militaristic/shooting terms.

Seems like a lot of people are creaming themselves at the thought that this may stem from Tea Party stuff. Pretty disgusting imo. We don't know anything yet bar that the poor woman is dead.

Disgraceful stuff. At least they have the death penalty in Arizona, not something I imagined myself saying any time soon.

Accessibility to guns in the US is a terrible problem.
I slept with an over and under in the wardrobe in my bedroom when I was a kid, up until the age of about, twelve. Guns have traditionally been very easy to gain access to in Ireland, and in many cases still are. The process for getting a gun in Ireland is ridiculous. You buy the gun all the accessories, and then you get your licence later.

According to RTE they have. Arizona have the death penalty, which was used last October apparently.

Accessibility to guns in the US is a terrible problem.

The congresswoman was pro gun-rights, so how do you explain that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 white1awake

    The Hill reports that Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-D) is proposing a bill that would cut Congressional pay and funding by 5%;
The pay cut would save taxpayers about $4.7 million by freezing the base pay of House and Senate lawmakers at $174,000. Majority and minority leaders each make $193,400 per year, and newly elected Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is to receive an annual salary of $223,500.
Members of Congress automatically receive a cost-of-living pay adjustment each year unless they vote against it. President Obama signed a bill in May halting Congress’s automatic cost-of-living increase for 2011 after it easily passed both the House and Senate.
On Fox News, Giffords said her bill would also cut members’ budgets by 5%, too.

Maybe someone didn't want their wages cut?

    RIP Gabrielle

The congresswoman was pro gun-rights, so how do you explain that?

That's kind of irrelevant to the issue, saying that she was in favour of it doesn't imply it wasn't the problem, maybe she was wrong?

That said, I think dragging this thread into a gun rights debate would be a bad thing.
Personally I'm not 100% sure of my stance on the issue, and this isn't the thread for it.

However you cannot take posession of a firearm or ammunition until the licence has been issued and there is a nine page application form requireing two referees and the name (s) of your doctor. There are also stringent security conditions and, of course, an intervue with the local superintendent. It is in fact very difficult to get a firearm here unless your are a drug dealer or paramilitary, who by their nature dont bother with licences.

I see Twitter, FB etc. alive with calls that Palin answer for this. Without the slightest bit of info as to why it happened. The woman had a strong pro-choice past too...

See that she may be alive. Good news (hopefully)

It's quite excruciating watching Fox, not once have they mentioned her vote for ACA and how she he in favour of immigration reform. It's barely noted that she is a Democrat either.

I've gone through the process, it is incredibly easy. The only part people usually find bothersome is the security requirement that prevents theft of the gun.

If you're 16 and you live in the countryside and you want a gun, you can get it. Talking about an interview with the local superintendant or the name of your GP are formalities, I'm not sure the GP is even legally bound to advise the Gardai on your medical history if it is relevant. It is very easy to obtain a gun in Ireland.

"U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ provision to ensure that tunneling under the Arizona-Mexico border is criminalized is expected to win approval tonight by the House of Representatives.

The Consolidated Appropriations bill also includes more than $17 million in funding Giffords requested for 17 projects throughout Southeastern Arizona.

“Tunnels are a serious threat to border security, and those who dig them must be punished,” said Giffords, whose district includes a 114-mile border with Mexico. “We must arrest and prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and that is exactly what my legislation demands.”

A short while ago, Wikipedia had her dates as June 8, 1970 - January 8 2011. Now they have had to change it back to birth date only. How utterly insensitive and misinformed the person is who is 'updating' Wiki on this! What is it that drives people to rush in to try and be first with the 'news'??

I sincerely hope she survives. This is savage behaviour.

The boards.ie politics forum is actually a good place to ask this question.

As this seems to be the goal of a few posters on this forum

    Your point?

We are talking about someone who has been shot, y'know, a life.

Also, there are reports of up to 11 other 'casualties'.

Therefore, once again, I ask what is your point?

A lot of news agencies were reporting that she'd died earlier, the wikipedia page updated after this, then about 15-20 minutes later the hospital corrected them, it was actually the news websites trying to be there first rather than getting official confirmation.

    I condemn this attack.

    However I can't say that I'm surprised.

People are disenfranchised from the political system, and politicians appear unnacountable to anybody but themselves.

Is it any wonder that someone (wrongly) took the law into their own hands?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,082 ✭✭✭Pygmalion

    Your point?

We are talking about someone who has been shot, y'know, a life.

People have been speculating about whether or not it's related to the Tea Party (including myself admittedly, with the image I posted earlier).
He's offering another reasonable motive for the act.

We are indeed talking about someone who's been shot, but when it happens to someone in her position the motives of the act are also very important.

They may catch the would be assassin for this but they will never tackle the root cause. Wingnuts in the Republican party, tea-partiers, idiots like Palin, Beck and organisations like Fox. Be interesting to see them express fake sympathy over this when they should be accepting partial blame.

This picture is going around Twitter alot atm:

Jesse Kelly ran against this Rep. in last years election.

I'd say they were using her face as target practice on the gun range.

The same website where I saw they had Amy Winehouse and Marilyn Manson in the recent deaths section in the last few years.

Certainly not an entirely reliable source.
