Sassy, Classy and Sensual Female Singers

We are all aware of the explosion in women singer-songwriters over the past 35 years or so.

From Joni Mitchell, hippie chick folkie turned queen of jazz-blues rock to the stunning Deborah Harry of Blondie to introspective and angry Alanis Morrisette, to the legendary Kate Bush to Tori Amos, we like or loathe them in equal measure.

Among these ladies is American bisexual Sophie B Hawkins. Devestatingly beautiful, sensual and very gifted, she sadly only had a couple of chart hits in the early to mid 1990s before fading into obscurity.

But she certainly knew how to make a 17 year old boy's hormones rage.:cool::pac:

Agreed on Kate Bush and Tori Amos and Deborah Harry. Also Sade, Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Madonna (once upon a time), Siouxsie Sioux, Roisin Murphy, Goldfrapp. Could never stand Alanis Morrissette - contrived angst rock, a watering down of what Hole and Babes In Toyland and PJ Harvey were doing before her.

Nina Simone so, so many great sensual songs. Definitely the most sensual singer I've found in the past ten years. Not mad about her angry stuff, but adore her slow, sensual piano songs: the collection 'Piano and Silk' is a great introduction to this side of her. Likewise the girl who's walking out with young Declan McManus has some ultra sensual songs. Melody Gardot, whom I went to see in the Olympia in November 2009, has huge potential as a blues/jazz singer. Karan Casey took my breath away as a trad. singer.

And I still have to put in Beth Gibbons when it comes to sensual female singers; Mysteries and Roads in particular.

Patti Smith is a legend.

This woman broke new ground is every way imaginable. From her poetry based music to her proto-punk style to her iconic andgroynous 1975 image on the cover of her debut album Horses. Her influence on music artists, female and male, is huge. It would not be an exaggeration to rate her influence as big as that of Dylan's.
