Why do we drink? Seriously

It is built into the Irish Constitution (somewhere at the back in small print) that every man, woman and child over the age of 18 are obliged to drink with exceptions to those wusses who can't drink without projectile vomiting all over the place or pissing in public. Yes, it's a well known fact that the General Public Bar (GPB) was liberated in nineteen one and six but later became the GPO after dogooders and nancy boys felt that alcohol was getting the better of some Irish people who were later shipped off to Oileán an Fearr for there own safety (now known as the Isle of Man) where they promptly cut the tails off cats for good luck and wore them in their shirt pockets. I may be drunk now but all is well.

True. I think people put too much importance on it, even show pride in it though. Which is sad really.

Cause it tastes good and I like the effect it has on me.
In just the right quantities of just the right drinks it puts you in a great mood I find.

Sure there are other ways of doing this but drink is easy, its an experience you can share with others in a social setting, its something to do (meaning a way to occupy yourself in a pub/houseparty etc.), its thirst quenching etc. etc.

    tl;dr

So why oh why do we drink!

    Because we must.

We drink because it's a great way to supress the population and make them believe that they actually have something enjoyable to live for.
It is fun. It's the easiest way in the world to unwind - or get wound up tighter and start fights.

Seriously though, I've been giving this some thought myself lately and am thinking of hangin' up me boots.

    Don't do it!

Hoping some of you might relate to this - I’m at an age where a night on the drink kills 3 days of my week. I’m relatively clean living Monday-Thursday (gym most nights, healthy meals etc) but when Friday rolls around I start thinking about a good smash in town to let my hair down following a tough week. I’m telling myself I deserve it etc. The truth is I end up eating garbage in the pub at dinner time on a Friday night washed down by 6/7 pints….getting destroyed on the sauce before hitting a nightclub where I’ll have a few jaegers etc, smoking about 20 fags followed by a kebab on the way home @ 4/5am. I’m ruined the whole of the next day because the sleep you have when you’re destroyed is not really sleep at all - I’ll also end up eating a filthy fry / McDonalds for lunch the next day and then having a Dominos for dinner. By Sunday I’m too tired & dehydrated to even think about trying to exercise and end up doing fcuk all. Before I know it I’m ironing my shirt for work on Sunday evening sobbing to myself wondering where the weekend went.

I’m off the sauce since before Christmas and have already noticed a difference in myself – skin/appearance is better, I’m sleeping well, feeling a bit fitter, happier mood etc. It’s also made me see that every single social occasion in this country revolves around the drink. If you’re not drinking people are on your case for being a ‘dry-sh*te’. I don’t see this ever changing really.

I'm making a really conscious effort to change my drinking habbits and it's tough as fcuk. Drinking in moderation is grand when you're sober but after 7 pints a few vodka & RB's makes perfect sense - before you know it you're on your hands and knees in the middle of Camden Street on the China Telephone talking to Frank.

Most people drink social, does that dont are usually trying to escape into an unreal world, where things for that time when there drinking seemed to them anyway to go away,Unfortunately that does not happen and the problems are still there next day and seem even worse.Bad bad cycle.

Why would one seek inferior ways to relax/have a good time.

What would you suggest Cinema: grand now and again but thats for a quite weekend and cant compare with going on the beer. Bowling/pool etc: again fine on an odd occasion but just cant compare. Coffee shop: nonsense, drinking tea and coffee all week it would bore me to sleep on a Saturday night.

I'm sure there are other things you will suggest but I can guarantee they would not give anywhere near the buzz and excitement of going out on the lock.

I've been in Ireland for 11 years now, and I'm still bemused by this idea that drinking is a binary proposition: you either drink till you drop, or you don't drink at all. How about just ... drinking less? It's not "cheating" to have a soft drink in between hard drinks, or to slow down and make drinks last longer. (This is why I'll rarely have more than one Guinness: one goes fast if I'm thirsty, but the second will go off by the time I get halfway down.) Get the food in before drinking - that helps too.

You don't have to stop drinking to avoid hangovers: drink sensibly, know your limits, and you don't get hangovers. Saves money too.

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

Because when your drinking/getting drunk there is literally nothing else more enjoyable and fun. Its simply great craic. Feeling hungover for a few hours is a small price (vomiting being a very rare occurance) and when the worst of it is over the pleasure of eating a big feed is nearly worth the hangover.

I'll ask you that 10 years later, it gets harder to deal with the hangovers.

I rest my case. Cinema / Bowling / Coffee.

Is that really all you could think of?

Does anybody know how to translate alien messages here?

Seriously though Irish people do drink too much and that is hard to deny.

They already have gotten much harder than they were a few years ago and I curse the drink to hell when I wake up after a session, but once over the worst of the hangover I'm as up for out again as I ever was.

There are many many things I really enjoy to do but they are day time activities, going to horse racing, watching sports, playing golf etc but none are for between 7pm and 3 am on a Friday and Saturday night or random week nights after work.

I thought alcohol made people that are depressed even more depressed... Is that true? I wouldnt know as I dont drink

Yes it is true. Alcohol is a bit of a devil because it can give you a temporary lift but too much can bring on major depression. It also kills brain cells.

    Good stuff, keep it up...

It is really scary how almost every single occasion in Ireland involves drinking.

At the end of the day alcohol is a poison to the human body. There’s a reason why after drinking so much the body will say "enough is enough" and induce vomit in order to give you some change of recovering.

So it stands to reason that by quitting drinking, you will see noticeable effects...much like smoking.

I find a lot of the reasons people drink are down to brainwashing. They think they need alcohol to relax and have a good time. They think it gives them confidence and makes them funny and more socialable. All it really does is lower your inhibitions...a lot of the time, for the worst.

I think a lot of Irish don't see themselves as having a drink problem because they arent the alcoholic bum, sleeping homeless on the street. But if you asked yourself "am i in control of my drinking", the honest answer in a lot of cases would be no.

I have also never understood the whole "i drink because i enjoy the taste" thing. I honestly couldn’t name 1 alcoholic drink that i would say "hmmm that does actually taste nice"...any drink I’ve ever tried has always tasted foul to me. But sure its horses for courses i suppose.

God i sound like a right kill joy :D

No it doesn't. Just a myth. It does damage nerve endings called dendrites though, and only with very heavy drinking, but not permanently. They repair themselves over time.

It's the embodiment of peer pressure for adults. All my friends are serious p*ss merchants....Friday/Saturday smashes usually starting Friday afternoon rolling over to Saturday...sometimes Sunday. If you're not involved you're being a b*tch...

HaHa yeah thats it...i found the same thing when i quit smoking. Even now, 5 years on, my mates will still try get me back smoking. They gone as far as telling me that my g/friend smokes when im not around and so its ok if i have one.

I guess people don't like to have their flaws pointed out to them. Seeing you go to the same events and having the craic without the need to drink makes them feel guilty because they know somewhere in the back of their mind they wish they could do the same...and so they turn to slagging you in order to make themselves feel better.

Aye, there are the few drinks i suppose, alcopops and the likes...but they are only masked over with sweet stuff to keep ya drinking :p

But sure you could just have a hot chocolate with a heap of cream or marshmallows :pac: just as good!

I do enjoy the taste of a few lagers and ales. Nothing quenches better on a hot day that some cool suds.

Even with lactose free milk, hot chocolate doesn't agree with me, stopped drinking it years ago :3
I found bulmers pear to be tasty as well, I haven't tried the berry one.
I wouldn't drink more than a small glass of either though

But I can accept that while I find the alcohol taste in most drinks repulsive, some people like it and do drink them for the taste

A year or two ago? Has it affected your memory that much? :pac:

I've off it for the whole of 2011. I went off it for 9 months of 2009 so I've done something like this before.
