Migt be wrong but I think the swastika was originally a Buddist thing??

Yes you are right and even the Egyptians had a version. But the swastika I have seen is the full-on red and black NAZI version, was a trend there for a while, haven't seen it recently.

Carlsberg had a swastika in their logo before the war, believe it or not.

Yes, if you visit Carlberg brewery in Copenhagen you can see it still.

Bryan Ferry got in big trouble for something similar a few years ago.

Mods: Don't lock this thread. The man has a point. Nazis looked great.
I remember the big hullabaloo made about his comments. For me its was not such a big deal. He was showing an admiration merely for the aesthetics of the nazi era, not for the party's ideology.

And to be honest, when you're as cool as Bryan Ferry, you can pretty much say what you like!

them long leather gestapo coats and knee lenght leather boots were soo sexy...or maybe its just my leather fetish lol :D

Ooh yeah, I think the officers uniforms especially were hot. As despicable as his character was I though Ralph Feinnes in Schindlers List looked sexy as hell :o
and remember how gorgeous Thomas Kretschmann looked as the German Captain in his uniform in The Pianist? Gah what a man...

They just looked much better tailored and more attractive than the allies uniforms.

Yeah Ralphie did look damn gorgeous in the aul List...

    Nazis were still Nazis though!

The swastika not originally adopted from the Basque country's symbol? representing the four seasons?

there is probably loads of similar symbols

Oh God yeah, I don't forget what they did, I just think their uniforms were cool. As well as using Hugo Boss they got a stage designer Bruno Von Arent in to design the Nazi's diplomatic uniform for the diplomatic service.
A lot of thought and effort was put into achieving the sinister but dapper look of the uniforms, especially the SS.
Regardless of what ya think of them you gotta hand it to the Germans-they don't do things by half.

Did no one tell ye fashionistas the First Rule of World Wars?

The side with the fanciest uniform loses.

To me, complementing Nazi dress sense is akin to saying Gary Glitter's songs were great rocking tunes.

They were, but you don't hear them on the radio anymore, do you?

the swastika is the symbol for protection. as far as i know, the nazis did use it this way, as in protection of the reich. but the symbol just became associated with their actions more than the meaning.

Actually, apparently the swastika was used by the Nazis as a symbol to represent the triumph of the will of the aryan race.

    I posted this on another thread before;

Ireland it seems has a very contraversial history of laundries. Not only did we have the notorious Magdalen Laundries but we also had the 'Swastika Laundry' who were based in Dublin and used the Swastika as their symbol all the way up to the 1960's.

Around WW2 the Irish army uniform looked a bit like the Wehrmacht uniform, especially with the helmet.

People seem to focus on a few Items that were really really stylish but seem to forget the crime against taste that was teh Brownshirts with their shorts  seriously how did that come about,

Hitler " we need to make our new SA look fierce and dominating"
Rohm " how about these ****ty brown shirts I got for Nothing with shorts and knee high socks?"
    Seriously, Like WTF??

Have to agree, a lot of their uniforms were top notch bad-ass looking.

In Asia, where the NAZIs didn't cause any direct harm on the population, you will sometimes find swastika stickers on cars or motorcyclists wearing SS style with the cross on the side helmets. They don't understand the history, they just think they look cool. At first I got a bit offended but now I understand that it is just fashion really.

I don't see what's so strange there, you'll often find people walking about Irish cities and towns sporting the Red Star.

Watched the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas the other night and thought the same thing. Those evil-looking overcoats and caps looked the business.

The lads in the camp let the side down with those uncouth pyjamas though - obviously scum. The big plume of smoke from the camp was obviously the result of thousands of John Player Blues bought with my taxes.

The Buddhist one is backwards to the NAZI one though.
You see them all over Japan too, which is curious cause of their direct support of the NAZI regime.

Maybe the Japs just thought they were a bunch of cross-eyed Buddhists om-ing their way around Europe.

So what you're saying is had things gone differently we could now be speaking German and populated with tall, well dressed (natural) blonde women? Damn you Allies!

Which is something that irritates me intensely. The soviets were just as bad and killed as many if not more than the Nazis, but because they won you can wear a hammer and sickle badge and its 'cool'.

for what its worth i have aluftwaffe jacket that does have a swastika on it (tho obviously its not for day to day wear) and a wehrmacht infanty jacket which has no logos or symbols on it and is damn warm and heavy in the winter

Apparently even the Americans were quite envious of the Wehrmact uniforms during the Ardennes Offensive in the cold winter of 1944-45 .

When even the people you're trying to kill like your uniform then it appears you have consensous.

They did indeed look badass, its no surprise the Imperial officers in Star Wars were influenced by Nazi uniforms, look at Darth Vader, black, lots of leather, even the shape of his helmet is taken from the Nazi infantry helmets.

Whilst they may have had a German aesthetic fortunately some wise person made the decision to give them all British accents. As well all know British accents are the most evil in the world.

Don't forget Rohm was gay. If he had his way they'd have been in tutus n' tiaras.

It's funny how they chose Hugo Boss designs. The lad who started up Puma was a member of the Nazi party as well. If only they knew the fear inspiring look that came with shell pants, hoodies and 'tackies'. They might have done much better.

Oh yeah, British accent=instant villain. Sure the guy inside the Vader costume was Welsh, he genuinely thought they'd use his voice and didnt realise until he saw the movies and heard James Earl Jones instead. Can you imagine a Welsh Darth Vader? "You be part of rebel alliance arent ya? Take hur aweyyy lad!"

Rudyard kipling used a backwards swastika on his books until the nazi's hijacked the symbol. Then he dropped it.
