You watch films and documentaries about Nazi Germany and the only thing you notice are the outfits?

This was no accident. Looking good was part of the popular appeal, especially to young people. The Nazis were masters of propaganda and manipulation.

I would have manipulated the bejesus out of them.

I'd have bent each of them over, bummed them into next week, stood back and admired my handiwork by taking a propa-ganda at the gape.

    I apologise. I'm really tired.

In Asia, where the NAZIs didn't cause any direct harm on the population, you will sometimes find swastika stickers on cars or motorcyclists wearing SS style with the cross on the side helmets. They don't understand the history, they just think they look cool. At first I got a bit offended but now I understand that it is just fashion really.

Amazing, didn't know that either. So there really was a well known designer involved.

I'm telling you if the SS leather jacket had no Nazi memorabilia on it I'd wear it some style and it looks very warm

Like I said, the "look" didn't come about by accident. They knew they had to appeal to people on a visual level and commisioned the best to do that for them.

They do sell long swastika-free leather jackets in actual shops, you know...

Migt be wrong but I think the swastika was originally a Buddist thing??

Correct. There's actually a Buddhist temple close to where I live here in Toronto and there are some decorative swastikas on it. I might be going close by there at the weekend. If I do, I'll bring my camera and get some evidence for all you AH people.

EDIT: There's also a synagogue with some swastikas on it but ehm... those ones aren't so 'decorative...'

You'll generally find it on the chest or hand of buddah.

We did this in English class, asking about any uniforms that appealed to people. The only one that did was the nazi one.

The swastika symbol has entirely different connotations and meaning in Asia. It is a buddhist symbol, and slightly different, it is not on an axis as the Nazi symbol is, if you know what I mean. It is level. The symbol is used on maps here to denote where buddhist temples are located. It is also used by Hindus in India with different meanings. There is no reason why Asians would associate it with Nazis when it has been in their culture for thousands of years. It's not that they think it just looks cool.

I think by Asia he/she may be referring to East Asia, where "Nazi Chic" is not an uncommon fashion statement. Specifically Nazi iconography, not to be confused with the Buddhist swastika parallel in any way.

the swastika is the symbol for protection. as far as i know, the nazis did use it this way, as in protection of the reich. but the symbol just became associated with their actions more than the meaning.

Carlsberg had a swastika in their logo before the war, believe it or not.
