Seriously? That's the best you can come up with?

Nah there are tonnes more, it's just the first one that came up with off the top of my head as myself and one of the Polish lads were talking about it.

People were talking on her the other day about sabrina the teenage witch still on reruns

You got me there. Sabrina the teenage witch, a milestone that was!

It's a meh comedy show, if it wasn't irish, i believe most irish people wouldn't be that pushed about it

Well I'm sure you're not the only one but I think you would be in a minority.

    Its got mass appeal!

I think its one of the funniest comedy shows of all time - its one of my all time favourites although way above it (cant really compare as its radio i suppose) for me in terms of belly laughs is something else Dermot Morgan was involved in...Scrap Saturday (just genius - utter genius)

The line you quoted is dumbed down comedy at it's best

I'd rank it about 30 in my favourite sitcoms list

You have an active ranking system for sitcoms?

Who cares. Why does comedy always have to be intelligent? Why can't it sometimes be a little stupid and dumb as long as it makes you laugh?

How? Because of swearing? Youre missing the joke completely if youre looking at it that way

Its a good enough sitcom but its really overrated. Black books was better.

Father Ted is bloody brilliant but I would still rate Arrested Development and maybe I'm Alan Partridge higher.

Exactly. That was the appeal about Father Ted. It had an unusual setting with oddball characters, stupid lines and outlandish situations. Nothing made sense and that's what made it appeal to so many.

    curb your enthusiasm

You're correct. Fr Ted relied on catchphrases, contrived zany surrealism (which the writers themselves admit they swiped from the Simpsons) and just enough paddywackery to keep the Brits interested. The worst episode of Curb is better than the best Fr Ted and nothing Matthews and Linehan have written has come close to Larry David's skills at plotting, social satire, self-mockery and even scatology and off-colour humour concerning incest and paedophilia.
I have never even smirked at Fr Jack or Mrs Doyle.

You could also argue that CYE is the same thing every single episode. Which it is. Doesn't mean it's necessarily bad comedy though.

I don't remember Ted or Dougal having specific catchphrases, they've had memorable quotes, but not catchphrases...

A lot of people seem to get put off by the character but once you get past that the comedy writing is top class.

Curb Your Enthusiasm isn't really that funny at all. Just some grumpy oul shite in contrived situations trying to get a laugh.

Victor Meldrew was miles better at it. Alf Garnet even better.

yeah, but ,no ,but. yeah. -well not Curb - Seinfeld
curb's tries too hard and relies on anger as an escape pod.

    anyhoo....
Fr Ted. yup it has all the faults mentioned, but what is also has is a warmth, a warmth which people find pretty good about - and not a mawkish sort of thing, more a beast wrestled to the ground with humour sort of warmth.
    god bless it. :)

So attending a support group for incest survivors is the same as playing the lead in a Broadway musical? Or having a black family come to live with you is the same as organising a Seinfeld reunion show? Sure, LD walks through these scenarios in his usual curmudgeonly fashion but I never get the sense of the show repeating itself, apart from squabbles over restaurant bills and tipping.

Larry begins story, pisses someone random off during story, continues story, needs random persons help to conclude story but happened to piss them off at the beginning and now cannot count on their help. End episode.

I enjoyed father ted the first few times, I've since started to hate it since coming on boards and every AH thread has a quote on it.

A post saying ' down with this sort of thing ' in every thread has made me weary of father ted.

It's a good show, but not the best comedy. Fawlty towers destroys it.
