What age do you start to feel 'old'?

I still don't feel old. I'm only late twenties. OK, so sometimes I lament not being 21 again, but that's more because at 21 I could stay out till 4am on a week night and get up after lunchtime the next day without worrying about losing a job or my mortgage or having to take the dog for a walk.
But then you realise that you didn't have a lot of money, you didn't have an awesome dog and a house and a wife, and it really wasn't *that* much better except for the general lack of responsibilities. But that got boring too. Getting up at midday is fun for about a week. Then you just start feeling like a complete waster.

I've a few grey hairs, but then I've had them since I was 17. I much prefer sitting in a quiet pub having a chat and drinking pints than skulling shorts in a nightclub where you can't hear anything. But thinking back on it, the pub has always been better than the nightclub, and you skulled the shots in order to make the nightclub remotely bearable.

My theory is that work makes you feel old. As soon as you start having to say, "I'll stay in tonight, have to work in the morning", that's when you feel like your Dad.

It's not so much the work as the way work is structured. When you're in school or college it all beings in September and ends in June. It's nice and compartmentalised and periodic. You get a break to do something else and most of all the concept of a year actually makes some sort of sense in relation to your life.

However when you get into the workforce it just goes on endlessly and before long one year has bled into the other and you've completely lost track of time and how you got to this particular point.

Sometimes I think it'd be nice if adults got the summer off too, if only to reintegrate myself in some of time-aware-reality, but then I realise I would probably never go back to work.

Anyone in their 20s moaning about being old needs to cop on

It's ok, statistically they're the ones that will get cancer and die at an early age of a horrifically painful death. Let them on.

Just hitting 30. Dunno about feeling 'old,' but I've begun to notice a big difference between myself and the people I hang around, and 'da youf.' There's a huge difference between my own attitude, interests and general way of thinking and that of people I know who are between say, 18 and 25.

I used to think I was with it. But then they changed what it is. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what it is seem strange and scary to me.

Sad if your in your 20's and you feel old. I'm 50 this year and still don't feel old despite all the adverts and 'golden oldies' shíte.

When the clothes that many people between the ages of 15-25 wear make you want to crease up with laughter.

i believe there is no particular age,

to be honest i think feeling old is directly linked to having children,

children tend to make you feel old,

especially when you find yourself repeating words your parents once used on you :o

41 now... feel old at times but I think it's in certain situations... when it takes me 2 days to recover from a workout in the gym.. when I'm saying the same things to my lad that my father used to say to me... stuff like that.

In general I don't feel old but get reminded I'm no spring chicken any longer.

No sleep for 2~3 years at a time has that effect.

I feel old first thing in the morning when my body doesnt want to function!
Also when I go to nightclubs, I feel like a granny even tho I'm "only" 26 :)

Regardless of what age makes you start feeling old, there's no point dwelling on it for too long..it ain't going to change!

I suppose at some point between 30 and 40 is when the penny drops though; Most men could play a half hour of indoor football at 30, but not at 40.
Most men could go on a mad session at 30 but not at 40.
Lots of men are content with being single at 30, but not at 40.
Lots of men lose their har between 30 and 40.
Lots of men put on weight between 30 and 40.

I'd say 35 is when the panic hits for a lot of men who thought they would stay young forever!

When you see a thread like this and you realise people your own age (early 30s) and older (some with children) are FAR more fun than some childless under 25s...

When my bones start to creek, I find nightclubs too noisy, and I'd much rather stay in with my dressing gown, slippers and a cup of tea. So, 25 then.

I'm nearly 20 and feel old. Friends all pretty much sit in every weekend and never want to do anything. Nobody wants to put any effort into anything anymore, so I'm kind of stuck doing nothing.

Oh no, wrong century - people don't die of old age at 36 anymore...

Jeez, some people seem to WANT to be geriatric...

I'm 19 and I feel old sometimes when I look at younger teenagers in my area when they start acting like little pr1cks. Me and my friends never behaved like that at 13-14, it's just kinda odd to me.

Plenty of your peers did though at 13-14, way back through the mists of time in 2004/5... :pac:

I'm 25 and I definitely party more now than ever and am fitter than ever too, but I was never really fit so that's still not very fit.

When you enter a pub and start appreciating the tiles and the curtains you're probably old.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,292 ✭✭✭yeahimhere

just 26 now and I oddly felt a change in the past year. Not sure if it's the recession or my age, but for some reason I just started feeling like I have to make more responsible decisions. Found I just went with my gut instinct before and now go for the safer option :o

I think it might just be a blip though and I'll get back to feeling young again next year...
