smart car and vrt

    Hi,

    I might be buying a LHD car to take with me later on and I found Smart fortwo with uk plates.

    Just out of curiosity I used the VRT calculator and it informed me price of 280e.

    I was thinking that VRT is thousands, not only couple hundred euro, so what is the story here?

    Could I transfer my insurance to that car, buy it, get it VRT and Irish plates, drive it and then take it with me.

    Sounds like guite good deal, specially if I could haggle the
    car price a little bit :)

    I have never done any VRT payments so I am not sure can I actually trust the calculator and should I just look a car with Irish plates already.

    So what do you think ?

    It is 11 years old, and a low value car.

    This is why the VRT calculator is returning a low number.

    To make it simpler, tell the buyer you will buy the car when he gets it on Irish plates - that is he registers it here before he sells it to you. You can pay him the extra VRT charges.

    A seller here is required to register the car here first before he may legally sell it on to you.

    A car dealer is required to sell it on Irish plates, I don't think a private seller is though. It was essentially the same thing when you only had a working day to register it as a private individual, but that's been extended now.

    A private owner is not entitled to sell it here on non Irish plates AT ALL.

    Where does it say that? I've only found reference to car dealers.
