Crack In Laptop Lid

    Hi,

    See attached pic.

Bought the laptop (Dell Studio 17) in March 2009 with 1-year warranty, bought the fancy 3 year warranty in March 2010.

The crack in the pic appeared in April 2010, albeit a lot smaller than in the pic.

The action of closing the lid is spreading the crack wider, and opening it up more.

I'd be very surprised if Dell don't fix it without quibble, but what should I expect when I contact them? Is this a common fault with Studios or Dells generally?

    Thanks for any replies,

    Mark

That would make sense, explaining why the crack has spread so much since it started. I just don't know how the crack started in the first place. It definitely wasn't dropped or hit - we treat this laptop like eggs. Maybe the short hinge was actually contributary to the crack starting?

Just called them now. Initially wouldn't entertain the notion of warranty cover (suggested it was "damage"), but on speaking with the tech support manager, he agreed to do it under warranty. They're sending out a technician the day after tomorrow to replace the cover.

The hinge could be defective, I would stress that point with them. Its not unheard of for this type of failure.
