Can the water down a well freeze. I'm trying to figer out if the water in my well has frozen some where between the submersible pump and the 90deg bend at the top of the well, or has it frozen between the 90deg bend and the tank in the garage.

I want to put in a temporary pipe untill the pipe that is frozen thaw's out but if it frozen between the pump and the top of the well it could be a bigger job.

Also when a submersible pump pumps the water up and in to the tank and when the tank is full and the pump switches off, does the water remaining in the pipe drain back into the well.

I imagine only a small bit of the ground is frozen, so its unlikely that the pump is. So its most likely the section of pipe from the top of the well to the tank.

I doubt that it drains when it is turned off.
