A friend of mine popped in about 15 minutes ago and said it was reading -17 in the car. Thats in Stranorlar btw.

It is bitterly cold. Im looking out of the window and I see 2 brass monkeys hugging each other.

Low last night in Waterford City -5.5c, now its -2.6c and clear but bitterly cold. Some interesting streamers in the Irish Sea but wont make it here i think.

Temperatures reached a record low on Thursday with -18.7 degrees Celsius recorded at Castlederg, County Tyrone.

This beats the previous record of -18 Celsius on Monday in the same area.

Snowing heavily all morning; now 25cm deep (just 3cm less than the Nov/Dec falls). Temp 0C, calm.

I think the "Thaw" coming on 26th is that large system of heavy wind coming from the south.

As far as I know, heavy south winds if with rain clouds, over cold land will initially be heavy snow, probably very heavy.

After that we are suppose to have a slow rise in temp and a thaw.

D14, Noticed a bit of a thaw as there was drippage from icicles and tree branchs, but temp dropped in the last hour. Has been snowing for a few hours, but really chucking it down now.

Dublin city centre is a mess with snow all day. Its going to be chaos getting out of the city by car tonight, especially since a lot of people were expecting a clear day today with no snow.

Merrion St, Dublin, we had a flurry of flakes for 30 mins but in the last couple of moments we've had a flash of lightning, followed quickly by the thunder and now we have a heavy fall of powder. Temp has dropped from 1.5C to 0.3C in last 10 minutes also.

Wrong thread but I wanted to answer the earlier question here about the front visible on satellite imagery. This is not the main frontal system expected for the 26th. That is still much further west in the Atlantic. What you're seeing is an arctic warm front that will edge in very slowly while high pressure builds over Ireland tomorrow. The main frontal system will push in behind this and then the arctic warm front will be squeezed in between the cold, dry air and the mild, moist air. This is the basis for the forecasts for snow or sleet on the 26th, so in a way, yes that is the weather of concern, but not entirely "formed" yet.

BTW, off topic also but my weather is rain, strong wind and 8 C.
