Hyundai Tucson is essentially a sportage with less sloppy handling and much better gearchange. Aim for a 130hp 6 speed over the older 116hp 5 speed.

I'm thinking of buying one of these as a family car (2 kids).

I was thinking about the 2 ltr diesel version, Anyone have any comments on them? Reviews seems to say they are good value.

I realise it's a couple of weeks since you asked, but just in case you are still trying to decide can I tell you my wife has a 06 Sportage, 2.0 diesel, automatic. It is nicely finished inside and has every extra you could want, and it's pretty reliable and well put together. But the engine is useless and the handling is terrible. Worst of all, it absolutely drinks diesel, never seems to go below 12 litres/100 km. If you're looking at a manual version it might be different but before you buy I would recommend you take a test drive and see what the fuel consumption is.
