Books! Always books! The imagination is way more powerful than CGI, and generally the original author of a book has much better ideas than the director who has to bow to the pressure of a massive budget etc.

What's the best gift you've ever received?

Oh I was nearly doing that today too. Spent nearly two hours book shopping. I like to buy the first book in a series for someone, but yeah, I was trying hard not to go "oh... that DOES look interesting..." I did manage to find World War Z for myself. Why was it in the comedy section?! Now I'm curious.

An acoustic guitar on my 21st birthday from my parents. Many people say it's the nicest guitar they've ever played and it's still my go-to guitar when I want to write something pretty. It also looks absolutely beautiful, with all the colour of the sea found somewhere on it.

Important thesis related question: Will taking up coffee help me stay awake longer and be more productive, or will I get too buzzed to concentrate?

If you're not in the habit I'd avoid it. Unfortunately I was a "I do enjoy a coffee of a morning" type gent, so when it came to thesis time I'd look to the bean for a pick me up, which also resulted in crashes. You're probably better off keeping your body pure and just drinking some water, going for a run, doing some weights. I'm sure a more constant energy will be better in the long run.
