Cou,ple of qs ladies and gents, sorry but they're probably really stupid....
    1) is it still necessary to root Androids to access paid apa? I'm presuming so since I keep getting auth errors but thought I'd double check.
    2) on a desire how do i stop programs from self starting? I.have ap killer and everytime I run it theres stuff to close that I know I haven't used recently, like the radio etc.

Sorry, first smart phone so new to all this!

Hey just got a lend of a G1. Popped the simcard in and it was working fine for ages. Now it seems to be locked to the emergency call screen, can access menu or settings, SIM Card is fine and has reception, PIN works ok. Anyone know anything thats causing this? Also I know nothing about these android phones.

    Ahh ok try this so.

in root of sd card create folder media
inside that folder create folders called
    ringtones
    alarms
    notifcations
now the easy part add mp3 into notification folder if you want to use for sms incoming
    add into ringtones for ringtones
    and alarms for alarms
if you made these folders while connected and transfered music at same time all should work
if downloaded songs via phone and put into these folders you must unmount your sd card switch of phone and then restart and then you should see the mp3 listed in the settings for changing ringtone/alarms/notifications

I've been looking at the Wildfire for a while now. How is it? How would you rate it out of 10?

Anyone else using the new market? Gotta say I like it although it was pretty slow after I first installed it.Seems fine now.
Id also like to say, Wow a lot of people who comment on & rate apps are dicks. After the facebook update last night gave people chat and push notifications which everyone was clamouring for theres still twonks rating 1 star for apps2sd or cause they cant change their profile picture. Dont get me wrong, Itd be nice but seriously.....

It's unmoderated AFAIK so it'll probably end up something similar to YouTube.

What is the next HTC model up from the Wildfire? I'm being offput by the absence of certain apps on it due to screen resolution.

Just got my Hero back from repair and it has the latest official rom. I think its as slow as a wet week. Unresponsive and cant even play angry birds at a decent framerate :p

Is it possible to root it and get 3rd party roms on it again? Because I have heard that once you go to the newer roms you cant root, atleast not using the method I used the first time around.

    Any ideas? Thanks

The latest official ROM is still Eclair (2.1) and you should be able to root this. Here is a guide

It might be worth rebooting a couple of times and giving it a day or 2 to see if it improves

i rooted my Hero (latest 2.1 rom) with the universal androot api, and it worked a dream and straight away.

    Sorry if this was brought up before but it's Christmas day and I don't have time to go back through all these pages;

Why thousands upon thousands of apps on the market yet f*~k all room to install them?????

After installing a handful of apps on my HTC desire I'm getting the low memory warning despite having a 4gb memory card. I got the apps2sd app to move whatever I could to it and I'm still getting the warning and can't install anything else on my phone. Do I have to go root it now FFS?

Edit: Got this sorted, if anyone else is having the same problem you can follow this guide to moving all apps to your SD card without rooting the phone. It also installs from the market to SD card by default.

    http://androidforums.com/desire-tips-tricks/174345-how-move-apps-sd-card-unrooted-device-noobs-guide.html

and if you get the "adb devices not recognised" error like I did (Windows 7) just download this and extract the files to the 'tools' folder.

I rooted it using the androot method and all went well. superuser.apk is installed etc..

But trying to install the Recovery Image is giving me grief. I think the problem may be the fact that I have version 3.32.405.2?

One method requires installing BusyBox and then installing Rom Manager which allows you to flash the recovery image.. BusyBox installation fails..

Another method requires Terminal Emulator and the command

    "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img"

But this also fails with a "missing flash_image"

    Any ideas?

Is it possible to return to an older firmware using an official HTC RUU?

Is the android market the same for all phones...?I presume it is,the reason I am asking is my sister got a wildfire and cant find cabbage.I have checked on my hero and on a mates samsung and we can both find cabbage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,664 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yup, the market is filtered for each handset. Common filters include screensize, trackball required, required library in the OS, etc.

    Filters all listed here: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/market-filters.html

There must be something on the wildfire hardware/software that is preventing cabbage from appearing on the market.

You can download the APK from the link in this post, and install manually.

I just got the HTC Desire and Its a great phone but I was wondering,is there a way to set the meteor wap so that it's only used for the browser and the other widgets update by wi-fi only?

I just don't want to get screwed by being charged everyday when I didn't really need the updates on the news etc.

There isn't a setting so to speak, but you can always put the mobile data toggle switch next to your browser and switch it on before you launch the browser, you just have to remember to switch it off again though :-)
Alternatively you can buy an app called tasker, and together with a free app called APN Droid, you can set your phone to automatically switch data on when you launch browser and then switch back off when you exit, along with lots of other automated settings. I use it to switch on gps when I launch google maps, and then back off again. It also switches my wifi on/off based on my location.

Yeah I just put the network switch on the front screeen, Initially I thought it was turning network on automatically which was annoying but it seems fine now and sure the updates are not automatic so I'll do what you said about the network switch. Thanks! :D

Just got the Desire. I guess keeping mobile connection off and only turning it on when I want to use it is the best thing to do? Can anyone advise on O2 prepay plans for data or is there such a thing? 99c a day seems a bit much.

Afraid that's all they have. It's mental that they haven't introduced something yet. I'm finally getting round to changing networks to 3 next week. Just ordered the free sim yesterday. You can buy a 500mb data bundle for €5 which should last the month.

It's insane. Will have no option to do anything other than switch networks because of this. facebook and twitter are not the internet!
