    Hi Folks,

I'm not a student in NUIM but was trying to ring the sports centre to find out if the gym is open. There is a message on their answering machine saying it was closed until further notice.
Anyone know if this is a short term or long term closure ?

    Cheers
    PK

Short term I assume - the university is closed until Monday because of the weather. The gym will probably be open again then :)

Gym was open yesterday I believe. Whole university is closed until Monday so that would include gym too.

There was a burst pipe in the sports hall, it might have gotten worse and they might need to close it for a few days to save as much of the plumbing as possible.

Anyone know if aerobics will be on again tomorrow?

Was p sure that the gym was closed because the room temperature had dropped below a certain level and they had to close for Health & safety / union reasons...

You mean the heating was broke? Because I'd imagine the temperature would remain a constant if it wasn't. The gym is a jokeshop operation, so poorly funded for so many years that I'm surprised no one has ever died in there.

Nobody wants to pay for it...

So they can't even open it with the heating switched off or something? I'm ****ed then.

Ah don't be silly, how would the staff keep warm? How would the toilets work, how would the showers work?

I'm not paying for a hotel, I'd just just wear a jumper and tracksuit while I lifted the weights. Unless you're a rough sleeper none of those things are hugely important in a gym. I'm not even sure what the staff do there to be honest, besides not answer the phone.

Now I can either not train at all for a month or who knows how long, or pay hundreds of euro for a yearly membership to a gym I only want to use for a bleedin' month. Feckit anyway.

Ah, you're just being foolish. The staff are there to help people first of all, primarily ensure that people don't kill themselves by deciding to bench 200k on the first go. Opening the gym up in unsanitary conditions and with no heating would be ridiculously stupid. Ok, it's crap you can't train properly for a month but there are other considerations you know? Get a month's membership in a gym, loads of places over short term deals now.

Well first of all I've never seen a staff member in the gym, which is fine by me by the way.
Second I don't see how the conditions are unsanitary? So the toilets don't work? What busy building is closed when the toilets are out of order? Sure there's 3 buildings with toilets within a 20 metre radius.

And heat? It's a gym. Soccer and gaelic players up and down the country are practicing outdoors.

And I've been ringing around and I can't find any gyms offering month long memberships. The business model seems to be a cartel of annual memberships only, the idea being people sign up and then never show up.

It's an absolute joke. How on earth does a burst pipe affect iron? Barbells and dumbbells? Typical lazy gits on taxpayers wages looking for any excuse to skive off work for Christmas.

And I've just remembered they never even have the feckin heat on!

And I didn't pay over a 100 euro for membership to a small, badly maintained toilet in the corner of the fitness centre either, I paid for the use of the gym. The whole thing and the way it's being handled is a complete and utter disgrace.

I used to work there and I have several friends who still work there and to be honest that statement is insulting to them and the hard work they do for little pay and absolutely no capital funding. But I'm sure you'll blame on the bears next and then on the immigrants and say you knew it was them all along :)

I doubt the Scrooges in the Bursar's Office/Accounts would even pay the staff for the hours they have missed.

I could have sworn, I had an all student email about it.
But I can't seem to pin it down.

Also doesn't the sports hall close during the last week of term? to prepare for exams (Which would most certainly require heating)

Well they have never even switched the heat on and they're using a burst pipe as an excuse to close the gym over Christmas. What else could you infer other than what I said?

What capital funding is needed once the equipment is paid for? Where is this generous capital funding going to come from? The taxpayers pocket I'd imagine. Good to see you have your priorities straight, people dying on trolleys and you want taxpayers to give you a pay rise.

And why do they deserve more than minimum wage? They're receptionists.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

What are you on about? First of all, I used to work there. I don't work there anymore so I don't require a pay rise. Secondly, none of these people will get paid for the hours the gym is closed! They get paid by the hour. Secondly, there's one receptionist. What about Paul, the sports officer? Barry, who's a physical therapist and fitness instructor. Barry P who's a former professional footballer and qualified coach. All these people work out of the sports centre plus some other fitness instructor heads.

And your point about people dying on trolleys is so ridiculous I just can't fully respond. If you care so much about the world and it's inequalities come join us on our protest today. We're gonna march down to the office of Aine Brady of the Kitt/Brady property and FF dynasty who've raped this country for decades. Those people are who you should be directing your anger at! Not some chap working in a gym for minimum wage so you can work on your physique.

Otherwise, I suggest you take up jogging :)

Do those people work for free? Honestly looking for more than the bare of minimum of taxayers money is a disgrace in these times. It's fairly typical of the sense of entitlement everyone on a taxpayer's wage seems to have.

And If it's a protest against tuition fees why shouldn't people pay tuition fees? Why should the taxpayer pay tens of thousands for someone to do a degree in sociology? How does that benefit them? The country is on it's knees and sponges like you are trying to leech every last penny from the people who need it. Like the people on trolleys in hospitals for example.

    Take up jogging? Feck off.

The gym is paid for by money from the student registration fee, not the taxpayer per se.

No the tax payer lump sum the University gets is supplemented by a little pocket money in the form of the registration fee.

Anyway the fitness centre site doesn't have the 'closed till further notice' sign up anymore so I assume it's open? Proper order.

Back open according to the SU's facebook. No water however.

So now you can totally tell the people working there what lazy assholes they are in person.
    Yay!
