Then you havent heard Sean Hannity refute global warming because it was snowing outside in winter...

Stuff has just really changed for wikileaks staff, they have gone from an annoyance to the American government to a serious threat to the US people in one swoop.

Dear God.....maybe some privileged Saudi might be inspired to take it upon themselves to start an organisation dedicated to attacking America!!!!!!!!!

Qatar is allegedly using the al-Jazeera news network as a bargaining chip, apparently promising Egypt that it would cease the network's transmission there for a year if President Hosni Mubarak agreed to deliver "a lasting settlement for the Palestinians"

I find the above interesting, really shows you how a relatively 'westernised' and straight talking news outlet is a threat to the various slugs in the region.. in this case, Egypt.

And now, thanks to Wikileaks, they have a nice, tailor made list of all the global sites that America thinks most important to their security. Including a site in Waterford. How throughtful of Assange. How exactly does that kind of information expose corruption or hypocrisy in the system?

Really this does not take a leap of faith, or a sense of trust in the American government, it really is just a matter of common sense.

Regardless how you feel about the war, or how you feel about insurgent groups in Iraq/ Afghanistan, what WIkileaks has just done is release a list of infrastructure considered critical to American interests in a time of war. Now if this contributed to public discourse in a substantial way, I might feel differently, but it does not

The American Government has not made comment on this particular release yet anyway.

    Yes, they have.

One sample comment alone from the English Times:
In Washington, Philip Crowley, Assistant Secretary of State, said: “There are strong and valid reasons information is classified, including critical infrastructure and key resources that are vital to the national and economic security of any country.
“Julian Assange [the founder of WikiLeaks] may be directing his efforts at the United States but he is placing the interests of many countries and regions at risk. This is irresponsible.”

    http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/world/americas/article2833403.ece

...The question also arises, if such importance is held to such information, why was it in an open un-encrypted email that could be easily got at in the first place?
The stupidity of those sending it by the method they did, has no limits it seems.

    Thanks for that.

The reasons for the distribution has already been discussed; it was the compartmentalisation of information that led directly to an inability to put the pieces together and prevent 9/11. Following this information is shared throughout the network. Doubt its that way now.

Yea, the reasons for distribution have been brought up in a number of places - but the methods of which they passed that information around (open and un-encrypted, if they hold such info to so high importance) is something they have not addressed, at least not openly for maybe been seen criticising their own in proportional blame, even to a small extent.

Twitter seems to be fiddling with Wikileaks ability to 'trend' on the site.

Twitter is censoring the discussion of #Wikileaks
Posted on December 5, 2010 by bubbloy

Twitter, the very popular 140 character social networking site, has a feature called “Trends” and is supposed to capture what the most popular topics of discussion are, at any given time. When people “Tweet” about a given topic, they can insert what is called a hash tag into their Tweet. For example, if I wanted to Tweet about Richard Feynman, and I wanted other people interested in Richard Feynman to be able to find it, I could put something like “#Feynman” within my post. Twitter would then automatically categorize this post under “Feynman” and voila, people can search for it on Twitter. This is how “Trends” are calculated. If say, within a given time span of perhaps 10 minutes, a million people put the tag #Christmas into their tweets, and this would be a very popular Twitter topic and should make it into the “Trends” list. Simple enough.

Today, as I was scouring the web for everything I could find about the censoring of Wikileaks and Julian Assange’s legal status I had a growing feeling of unease that Twitter was actively censoring the discussion of Wikileaks. New Tweets filed under the tag #Wikileaks were popping up at an astounding pace. If I left the page alone for literally 30 seconds, 40 new Tweets tagged as #Wikileaks would be there when I returned. It just seemed like #Wikileaks would be one of the most popular topics and therefore be reported as a “Trend”, but I really had no way to quantify this...

Wow. Regardless of your view on the matter, cant people see the more you suppress someones message the more people are going to be interested in it.
    Its free publicity for wikileaks.

Ok, woah, did they just step over a line. I just jumped to another side of the fence on this one.
And they felt the need to release this list? I think the US is now well
within its rights to prosecute. Any state would be.

Please don't take this as being directed at you, I understand that neither of you have said what I am about to comment upon, but it brings up the concept.

    Should it matter?

My argument against Wikileaks hasn't been that they have been leaking any particular classified information. It's that they've been leaking any classified information. It's the entire process that they're affecting, not just specific incidents.

People shouldn't suddenly start caring because it has been revealed that the US government thinks that an insulin factory in Denmark or a Russian gas pipeline is important to US national security. (And it should be pointed out that these things are important to the US not because the US needs them, but because if the main Russian gas feed to Europe is destroyed, the resulting chaos in Europe would have negative effects on the US). People should either care because they think that the principle of some form of government confidentiality is good, or not care because they don't like the idea of any form of State secret at all. Irish people should not suddenly be starting to change their minds as to the possible ramifications of these leak organisations just because a place in Waterford has been listed as a place of interest to those who want to attack the US. Today, the US and its interests are the target. Tomorrow (Actually, mid-December, according to ex-Wikileaks personnel who are starting a new site after getting fed up with Assange's anti-US vendetta) it's other nations.

Some secrecy, I believe, maintains stability in the world. As more nations find their inner workings being dismissed, I am not sure that world stability won't decrease.

I wonder if the same thing is happening to the Swiss post website as that of Paypal, it's currently not available.

    From BBC news
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange arrested in London

The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police.

The 39-year-old Australian denies allegations he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden.

Mr Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens, has criticised the Swedish prosecutors, saying Mr Assange had been offering to meet since August.

Swedish prosecutors say he hasn't... I'll be interested to see how this one plays out. There's a group of people on either site who either want to see him arrested anyway, or who think there's no chance he's done anything wrong because of his involvement in Wikileaks. CIA conspiracy and the like...

I'm just vaguely curious and wonder how it goes!

Definitely sounds like a frame job to me. It seems odd that someone who puts themselves out there revealing sensitive information on world governments would do so in the knowledge that there is similar sensitive information about themselves which is definitely going to be revealed.

Or to put it another way; If I had sexually assaulted two women in my past, the last thing I would be doing is championing a "release all information about everything" campaign against world governments.

Frame job my arse. Everything has been done openly and above board. If they wanted him silenced it's a pretty piss-poor attempt. He's a bollix that has been hiding behind the wikileaks name and I'll be delighted to see him taken back to Sweden to face justice. Prat.

What do you mean he's a bollix? What has he done specifically that would warrant such an immature response from you? What, he sets up a website that leaks documents showing governmental criminality and that makes him a bollix?
    Wow! Such profundity.
