Best age to get tested for Haemochromatosis (Iron overload)?

    Hi.

    What is the best age to get tested for Haemochromatosis (Iron overload)? My father has it. It seems to affect almost exclusevly males.

    I heard from someone that 35 is the age to get tested as no phlebotomies (bloodletting) is required before that.

    Do you no if its only sons that need to be tested and not daughters?

    As far as I know, both should get tested. This disease is very common among Celtic people and Scandinavians.

    I no cos my dad had it but when i mentioned it to my doc at the time it paid no attention to me and never mentioned to me bout getting tested or anything. Didn't no if i needed to be tested or what's the story

    Best to get a second opinion. You see females are less at risk due to monthly blood loss.
