I propose Goose's Law, a parallel to Godwin's law, whenever an anti-atheist statement works in Stalinism.

So you're pro-praying for the economy then?

Ok, you start and I'll track economic growth for the next 6 months. We'll present the results to the pope, dis/proving the god hypothesis once and for all.

    E-mail sent:
    Are you for real?
Are you really suggesting that talking to an imaginary being is really going to lift this country out of the financial crisis it currently faces?

As an Atheist I find it extremely insulting that you would suggest that I should pray to your god for help during times of need, and i demand that you apologise, not only to me, but to all of those in this country who do not share your religious beliefs.

What you are essentially doing here is trying to blame the actions of actual living people on an imaginary entity. I thought it was bad when Charlie Haughey told us to tighten our belts while he was living the high life, but this just takes the biscuit.

I'm sitting here trying to get my head around why an elected official would even suggest that the current financial crisis can be helped by something invented by people who were trying to figure out natural occurrences, but I just cannot seem to find any justification for it.

Can you please explain to me how this god you believe in can suddenly make money appear?
Could you please also explain how this god has the ability to make money appear from nowhere?

If this god is as benevolent as you seem to think he is, why does he not answer the prayers of those in more dire financial straits than we are?

    I eagerly await your reply.

    Thanking you,
    Terry O'Dowd.

I'm drunk and just saw my mistake now.
Meh. I'll still post any reply here.

I'm fairly certain that I had something else to ask in the second question there.

Well 'the love of money is the root of all evil' so perhaps God is punishing us for the Celtic tiger, so in reality praying for forgiveness isn't such a bad idea.

She may well do so, but I find it quite crass that someone would go to the bother of suggesting my late mother may be engaged in fellatio in the underworld, on a public message board, under the guise of a serving member of government.

    Why did you do that?

I intended to imply the likely nature of any reply you might receive would not address your main concern.

I did this in a way that was over the top (and a quote from the Exorcist btw, film fans).

If you took offence I'm sorry.

    But it is After Hours.

I know. I just wanted to make you feel bad for a while.

If it's any consolation, writing that exact line on the cover of my Irish homework book landed me my first suspension and a week long detention back in 1990.

Anyone know what plans the security forces in the state have to quell the backlash from the civil and public service union members when their pay and jobs are axed in december?
Will the garda reserve be taking on more recruits for this purpose?
