Afaik, they can tell the results there and then but because the clinic is generally rather busy, if you test positive for anything, they'll ring you and if you don't, you won't hear from them again.

    Hey everyone,

Firstly thanks for the information in this thread, it has been of great help.

I just have a question about the STD clinic in Galway (in NUI hospital). Can I go in and just get tested for chlamydia and get the results straight away? The reason I only want that test is a girl I recently started a relationship with got a screening and she may have it. Also I am leaving the country on Thursday and it would be pointless to get tests for other STDs that take longer than 4 days to get a result as I won't be here anyway. I do plan on getting a full screening once I arrive in my new home.

Would a gp test for chlamydia?
I have a medical card, how long would the results take?

most can and some will. results should be instantaneous, (or within a few mins anyway).

If you have had unprotected sex with a person of unknown status I highly recommend you get a full STI screening with an STI specialist.

    Slightly incorrect statement.

Yes the vast majority of the population has "a" strain of HPV. However, you must understand that there are over 100 HPV strains. Not all strains manifest in Genital Warts (in fact only a small number do) and even the HPV strains that cause genital warts will not lead to visible Genital warts in everyone.

    Hey.

Unfortuantely as you say there are no blood tests in Ireland for HSV diagnosis. It is possible to travel to clinics in London, if you were so inclined. In Ireland, tests can only be performed by swabbing open sores etc... Although, this is not always reliable.

Usually, the first outbreak of Genital Herpes is very overt, very painful and very very noticable. It doesn't sounds like you have herpes to be honest. You should keep an eye on it all the same. The skin on a penis is no different to any other skin, it gets blemishes, pimples, spots etc... I don't think you should be worrying about this, seriously.

Your condom usage is really important and although as you say condoms, even when used correctly, don't offer full protection against HSV, they are still very effective.

It is also not unusal for pimples/spots etc... to last over 12 days. Seriously, just don't worry and try not to play with the spots, excessively clean/scrub them or focus too much on the area as you will only prolong them.

Best of luck and don't be worrying so much.

Are you sure about not getting blood test for hsv in Ireland? I went to a private clinic, the doctor took bloods and i believe he ran an ic something test, possibly g. Results were back in a week and he assured me i had nothing.

it would be news to me. Such tests are not widely available in Ireland - none of the main public centers offer them and I've never heard of a private practice offering them either - ps most of the actual sample testing of bloods is done centrally (i.e. not in the private practice).

I am not going to say that you weren't tested for it - but it wouldn't not be the norm, unlike the UK or US for example.

Okay thanks for the info, slightly disconcerting though. My doctor assured me they were tested for. I believe my samples were sent to the NVRL.

Hi Uriel you got me a bit worried there so double checked with two doctors. One doctor (mentioned quite a bit in this thread) told me it is possible to test for HSV in Ireland (through testing for serum. It isn't always recommended though and what makes doctors hesitate to use this is that if a patient tests positive it does not definitvely conclude whether the patient has genital or oral HSV and HSV 1 and HSV 2 can be found in both regions, therefore a definitive conclusion can not be drawn and it can cause unneeded physchological trauma to the patient. If there is a positive test, the doc will actually need to grab a culture sample to conclude that it is genital herpes.

I think in other countries the rates of HSV2 being located on the genitals is higher while in Ireland and UK the rate of HSV 2 and HSV 1 on the genitals are more even.

My own doctor, showed me my actual results from the National Virus Reference Laboratory, which quite clearly state the test, specimen type and result.

I see the logic in what the first doc said, a high percentage of people have HSV 1 anyways so alot of people would test positive without even having genital herpes and cause alot of undue stress

I was wondering if there is a certain way STI Clinics give out results? e.g. by post or over the phone. And is there a certain length of time it takes to get results back?

I assume it could vary by each clinic but I thinking along the lines of the ones in James' or Mater Hospitals (if anyone has experience for those in particular)

I'm not experiencing any problems at the moment (I'm male btw) but thought it'd be a good idea to get things checked. if I got the all-clear, I still want to be discreet as best I can. I still live with family so don’t want an envelope arriving marked “XXX Hosptial”, having them worry and then trying to explain.

Results are usually given out via phonecall. You can request written confirmation of your resuts should you wish. St James' generally do not contact with results unless you test positive for something, usually if you haven't heard from them with 2 to 3 weeks you have the all clear. It's not ideal but that's the way they operate.

The STI clinic is separate from the main hospital so any file created for you there should not be associated with your main hospital file

Just wondering if your local GP can test for the most common STI's, Chlamydia etc.? Would it be best to ask for an appointment with the nurse? (i'm female).
Don't really want to ring up and tell the receptionist what the appointment is for, and don't really want to pay €150 for an appointment in a clinic town when i don't think I need a full screening.
I have no symptoms (and have had the same partner for 4 yrs) but just want a check up for peace of mind and future family planning.

I have seen in some UK magazines that you can get chlamydia/gonorrhea home testing kits, are they available in Ireland?

    Thanks

Not trying to be smart with you or anything like that but why not go for a full screening ? Theres no harm in it and it's good sexual health management. I'd always recommend going to STI specialists rather than GPs for all such testing. Public GUM clinics are free if money is an issue

If someone were tested and told they had an sti such as chlamydia for exampe, would they be able to request two courses of antibiotics, one for their partner also?

Does anyone know what the times are for the clinic in Galway at the University Hospital? And what days is it open? Or is there any other clinics within the Galway/Athlone area (Ballinasloe excluded)?

No. A Doctor won't (or shouldn't) provide a prescription for an individual that they have not had a consultation with.

Both people should be tested and treated according to the results. Their infection should then be managed until it is resolved - e.g. abstinence or protected sex (including oral) until the infection is cleared.

Well mine did anyway. They just take swabs and urine and sent it off to a lab. Will probably take a bit longer to get the results but as you have no symptoms I don't see the problem with that.

I'm 99% sure all GPs could do this but I don't want to cost you 50euro over nothing. you could put on an accent or something on the phone. Or you could check if the GP has an email address and just get a fake hotmail account to contact them

So basically if you work 9 to 5 weekday its tough sh!t!

Is there anywhere else around the country that you could go in the evening/at the weekend?

Not really, it's the same as any other doctor's appointment, there aren't many GPs that are available outside those times. Ask for a few hours off for a doctor's appointment, the only difference is in your head

In as much as you can have a pleasant experience going for an STI screen, Charter Medical in Smithfield gets my vote.

After some foolishness at the start of December (damned party season), gave them a buzz last Thursday to enquire on their screening programme. Its walk in, so popped out of work and went down. Place is clean, modern and very welcoming, a million miles from James's or that Wellman place up on the northside (sorry can't remember address). Then again you are paying for the privilege, €120 to be exact.

Had my samples taken by a very polite nurse, who confirmed my history and phone number, as they offer you a text service if your results are clear. Agreed to all that, got the sampling over with, and headed back to work. About 45 mins in total.

They say normal wait time is 2 weeks, however happily I got my all clear text today, 1 week later.

Great service, can't praise them enough.

Not sure what your encounter/exposure was but Mid January is not 12 weeks after early December.

Under Irish and EU and indeed FDA guidelines 12 weeks is required for a conclusive test for HIV and HEP B.

Now, at 6 weeks tests are pretty good - the State of Massachusetts uses a 6 week policy for the window period (depending on the risk level).

But the timeline for your testing doesn't even seem to hit the 6 week mark. Might be worth thinking about. Did the clinic not explain this to you?

Hi I was wondering what the story with testing in Waterford is? How much does it cost, how long do you have to wait for appointments/results? And what actually happens during the screening for a male?

I can't tell you anything specific about Waterfrd, perhaps give google a lash.

As regards the screening, you'll discuss why you are there to be tested, a bit of background on your relationships and sex life. The doctor will then feel around down below. It will be a little uncomfortable and the doc will probably squeeze you a fair bit. You'll provide a urine sample and you the doc will rake a swab from te inside of your penis - cotton swab in the urethra. Unpleasant, a little painful but it's quick and you'll get through it. Blood test taken then for HIV, hep b, syphilis. This is a standard blood test nothing out of the ordinary.

Depending on your sexual orientation a swab of the anus may also be taken.

Thats it really. Most doctors perform the urine and swab analysis there and then and will give you the result regarding chlamydia, gonorrhoea etc straight away.

Blood tests generally take about 2 weeks but can differ from facility to facility
