Delta is better to actually fly with. Comfier flight. They feed you every 5 minutes!!!
But they overbook their flights and the terminal in JFK is crap! (I'm sure the latter is unimportant)

The last time I flew with them the return flight was well overbooked and there were quite a few people left stranded.

I'd pick Aer Lingus simply to avoid Delta's dump of a terminal at JFK.

All the fleet are also updated in on-demand entertainment, new seats etc - so it's not that bad at all.

hmmmm not much of a difference so really..!! Being stranded on the way home would be a disaster! :o

Why not pick the one that employees Irish people and pays tax here!

I'll never fly with aerlingus to the states again after the last rude arrogant and plain crap service dished out by them to me and my family.

Hmm.. sorry to hear that, you must have been unlucky. I fly with them every week and prefer them to many others.

Just out of interest where did you fly to and from?

One thing you might want to consider is which flight clears US immigration and customs here in Ireland (before departure), rather than doing it on arrival in New York.

Believe me, you will really be glad to be able to do this here, rather than join the very long queues at JFK when you arrive.

Some Aer Lingus flights do (the morning ones I think), but their 4 p.m. evening flight doesn't.

Would you consider Continental? You do end up in New Jersey however it can often be significantly cheaper than Delta or Aer Lingus

Although it's NJ, it's a very similar distance into Manhattan as from JFK. I think the terminal for Continental is really nice in Newark too, lots of nice places to eat etc.

I swore after my last trip to the states that it would be my last with Aer Lingus.
Uncertainty regarding a possible strike the day before i was due to leave.
Actually when i think back, most issues i have ever had with airlines seemed to be Aer Lingus.
Go with Delta, everything is better with them.

As far as the other post is concerned "employs irish staff etc",you owe Aer Lingus nothing and they don't care too much for their customers anyway.
A quick search re their sales on here tells a lot for example.

They employ irish staff and cut irish jobs at the same time, shower of gangsters, should have sold to ryanair, there along the same category except they pretend to be posh

Another thing to keep in mind is that Aer Lingus have updated their fleet and all NY bound planes have personal TV's which are great. delta unfortunately only have a few updated planes with Personal TV's and if you dont get one you have to put up with the old overhead tv's which in my opinion dont help to make the journey any better.

Just an update on this and a word of warning. Delta have started to put some older 757's on the JFK route.

I booked my flights and flew over on a 767-400 and was singing their praises. The IFE was excellent, PTV's etc and the cabin service was excellent.

On the return flight they scheduled a 757 and according to seatguru the 757's they use on the JFK-DUB route a the newer cabin with PTV/AVOD etc. NOT TRUE.

We were placed on an aircraft that was as bad as anything I have been on in the past.
    1. Seats were old, worn and no PTV.
    2. We got a heavy smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin at times.
    3. The food was way worse than on the way over, it was cold an not at all nice.
    4. My seat was battered and worn and my tray table would hardly stay up when locked.
All in all it was a terrible flight and the only saving grace was the strong tail wind which got us back to Dublin in less time than normal.

Also on these planes be careful with overhead storage. Delta seem very liberal with carry on luggage as we found out to our detriment. Some people brought 2+ large cases on board and as we were boarded in zone 4 when we got on there was no room for our small carry on bags and my girlfriend had to place her bag on the ground in front of her making the already crap leg room non-existent. The cabin crew were very unhelpful with this and just said it was a first come/first serve basis. If they only enforced the appropriate hand luggage rules this would no have been an issue, but instead we had selfish people hogging more than their fair share of overhead room without being stopped.

Not nessecarily untrue, either. Equipment swaps can happen, if a the planned plane goes out of service for whatever reason, Unless you're flying an airline that a completely fitted out fleet, than that's always going to be a possibility.

As for food, I always find airline food coming back from the US to be pretty poor compared to going over - but of course, there is little excuse for it being cold no matter what the quality.

I understand, but at least Aer Lingus has a complete fitted out long haul fleet now. So just adding my 2 cents to the thread regarding which airline to choose.

I flew Delta Dub-NYC and ATL-DUB recently and was not impressed at all. As previous poster said planes were very old and tatty, continuous problems with the PTV's on the way to NYC and no PTV on the 8 hour flight back from Atlanta.

Had similar problems with luggage storage and also there were only four cabin crew for the whole of economy which I thought was way less than other long haul flights I've been on.

I flew with Continental to Newark during the summer and they were great. They worked out the cheapest when I priced it! Everyone has their own consoles and they had a good selection of movies, tv programmes etc. The food was actually quite good (as airplane food goes) and the staff were very friendly. I'd definitely fly with them again.

+1 on Continental, they are fantastic to fly with, great food, service and entertainment options and I have always found them to be cheapest of the major Trans Atlantic carriers. Don't be out off by landing in New Jersey, it is actually one of the easiest airports to get into Manhatten from and if you take the bus or train, you get amazing views of the city.
