Hidden tunnels of Ireland....

On a kind of follow on from the green bridges thread, I wanted to see how many tunnels under roads their is, but you have to be able to drive into them! :) I was in two lately that I never knew were there. One under the N7, and one under the M50. :D

On a kind of follow on from the green bridges thread, I wanted to see how many tunnels under roads their is, but you have to be able to drive into them!

I was in two lately that I never knew were there. One under the N7, and one under the M50.

Glengarriff to Kenmare Tunnels. Theres 3 in a couple of hundreds metres. I'm told the long tunnel has a hole drilled in it and the sunlight forms a line on the ground and that line is the Cork and Kerry border. Don't know how true that is but anytime I drive through it I tell who's ever in the car with me

There's a private underpass/partial junction for the use of Roadstone near Newlands Cross; could be this he means.

Thats the one! Its decent enough, their is a 4m height in it. Its only one way though

The tunnel under the Naas Road at Kingswood was built to allow Roadstone trucks cross under the road to travel in the direction of Dublin. It was built in 1971/72, just a few years after the Naas Dual carriageway itself was built.

I remember reading about this tunnel in an old Engineering/construction periodical from the early 1970s.

There's the prospoect Hill tunnel in Galway which goes from the Train station all the way over towards Suckeen/Wood Quay. Passes under several roads, was built for the Galway-Cliftden railway. Of course it's not accessible anymore but still in situ.

^ no longer vehicle accessible (concrete blocks in way) but still foot accessible and lit last time I was there. The working toilets are westbound so it has a use!

Yup. The existing link road from Kill to Johnstown is now built on its southern entrance. I think its portal in Goffs was just filled in. I must look. I knew it well, along with the roadstone tunnel at Newlands.

Im concinved that tunnel has saved lives. The other alternative to get into Kill was to cross the N7 which as anyone who tried it will testify was a scary experience. I was so happy the day I discovered that tunnel under the road!

I believe it was a very popular pedestrian route after the Snooker! Back in the day.:D

Oh, I forgot about the tunnel at Goffs. I presume it was made defunct by the Nass Road upgrade. When would that have been built? Around the same time as Goffs...1976 or 1977?

I'd agree that this tunnel probably saved lives. Apparently the Naas Dual Carriageway had a horrific fatal accident rate when it was first built in the 1960s because Irish drivers didn't know how to drive on a dual carriageway.

I wonder if there are any other road/access tunnels under some of our other older dual carriageways? I'm aware of a pedestrian subway under the N11 Stillorgan dual carriageway dating from the 1970s - I use to use it catching the bus to work in the mornings. Anywhere else?

In Galway there use to be a Tunnel connecting the County Court House (Town Hall was the Town court house) with the Galway Gaol. It ran under the Salmon Weir Bridge. Of course the Gaol is long gone now replaced by the Cathedral.

Many jails and courthouses around Ireland were connected by tunnels.
Nenagh is another example. The jail is still in great condition but has been closed off for decades now.
Not sure how you would get access to it. Maybe an opportunity if they wanted to expand the Heritage Center. The condemned prisoners cells are still open

The courthouse was refurbished in the last few years, no expense spared.

There is a road tunnel under the N18 in Co.Clare, between Bunratty and Setrights Cross. On Google Maps, it doesn't appear on "Map" but it can be seen on "Satellite". The Street View camera didn't go through it. That part of the N18 and the tunnel was probably built in the 70's.

its at GOFFS Bloodstock Sales centre, just past Kill, in Co Kildare.
Used to use it regularly when attending the snooker in Goffs!
If you are heading from Dublin to Naas, you take a left and there is a road that bring you under theN7 and into goffs,
and if you leaving goffs and going to Naas you can come back the same tunnel.
From memory though, articulated lorries couldn't use the tunnel, but my memory is a bit fuzzy, its about 15 years ago when i last used that tunnel.
