Yes i know there are a few - but i'm talking bout a lot more of them - to the point of replacing the nightclub nonsense

been reading the deeply depressing posts (some of them) about nightclubs (which i despise so so much) I wonder is it time to bring back de aul Céilí in foull force.

and how would one do it?

One would possibly make a list:

    1. a room
    2. a wooden floor
    3. some spit (for the floor)
    4. some sawdust (for the floor)
    5. some diddley eye music
    6. some alcohol
    7. some menfolk
    8. some wimmins
    9. hang sandwiches and tae

    sorted :P

I avoid nightclubs where possible myself.

However, i'd prefere to go to Coppers than to go to a Ceili if i had to choose..and that's really saying something!

Nightclubs are equally as awful. Any place, where people go just to drink and pull are terrible. Nice relaxed and quiet spots are the way forward.

But nobody has ever pulled at a Céilí.. fact!

And these Ceilis would be banging out the freshest hits of 1893 I suppose.Nothing as exhilarating as listening to a cheap fiddle and a piano accordion playing a tune you've heard a million times.Sounds like it could be as crap as any nightclub.

How about just going out and having a laugh, with no plans or cares. That's what I do.Could end up anywhere, doing anything with anyone.Que sera sera.
Have you actually been to a ceili?I have.It was crap.Zero percussion, zero soul, zero ecstasy. But plenty of swaying messy drunks. All the boys down one side and de garrils down d'udder, and the local PP there the whole night.Way too much De Valeran utopianism for me.End of rant:pac:

Don't forget the priest stalking through the lanes with a blackthorn stick makin' sure there's nobody fornicatin' in the shubbery. Down with that sort of thing!

What inspired that thought artsmart. Were you watching 'come west along the road' on rte tonight. I had it on mute for a while freaky looking.

    :o

They used to make us hold hands and dance with boys. What did they think would happen? Oh memories of being fourteen years old and in the Gaeltacht.

Céilís scarred me for life after I was paired with an odd young man with abnormally strong fingers who played the bodhrán and crushed my little hands at every opportunity he got, thinking it was all hilarious.

No to céilís! Bring back the GAA discos instead. :D

Not sure about a Ceili as I have never been at one but it couldn't be worse than nightclubs. I had an ex who caused me some amount of grief because I never was very interested in going clubbing, I am of the opinion that once I have a girlfriend I should get an exemption from having to endure a nightclub for the duration of that relationship as I am, at that stage, no longer looking to pull so the single semi-worthwhile purpose of a nightclub is thus no longer applicable.

i'm just going to throw it out that when i was in the gaeltacht, the céilí was A LOT of fun and i know a good few of my friends go to reunions and céilí it up over there so YOU KNOW if you believe it will be okay, it could up alright.

Our Gaelteacht band used to sing "Mún, Mún in aighe na ghaoithe!" to the tune of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" - they doubted the student's ability to pick up the Irish language and couldn't be convinced otherwise!

Twas funny when I was 15 but not right now, Céilí's and the Irish language are evil beyond repair!

Down with this sort of thing!

Jesus, how long ago was that? ;)

A lot of Céilís are held in halls and community centres so there's actually no alcohol, just the tae and sangwiches.

They can be good craic! I ordered a hippy costume off ebay last night for my 70 year old Da who's going to a fancy dress Céilí in December. He goes to 1 or 2 a week, heads off around the country in the car with 3 women :pac:

But sure didn't Tadhg go off with the tinker's daughter at the ceili. (From the film The Field by the way)

    "I'll dance with ya tinker!!"

He actually swung her around like a lunatic at the ceili, he made up for it later in the caravan though ;)

    Yeah, that was scary,

    the nightclub thread.

I understand the hatred of Céilí buzz, but nightclubs only facilitate fear and then drinking, then pukin...

must be a middle ground out there somewhere...
