If I help the motor reach this switch by pushing it on with my finer, everything works as normal and switches off when the desired temperature has been reached.

Question is, is the motor knackered and need to be replaced or is there something else I'm missing.

sounds like the motor, its the cheapest option to try to replace it but its trial and error really, you could just buy a new head and be done otherwise..
