Best way from Bergamo to Livigno

Have been sifting through the threads here, cannot seem to see the answer here, Has anyone driven from Bergamo to Livigno? - if so what is the best route?

I hired a car for that trip two years ago this is the route I took:

but I read some where that the roads arn't as good and are weather dependant nearer, or something like that.

cool, thanks for all the information - second time back, this time taking the in-laws for their first time sking :rolleyes: should be interesting, amazingly enough most of the conversation has been about the transfer!

make sure you get snow chains, that the hire people give you the correct size snow chains and that you know how to put them on before leaving car hire center , ain't no fun with the in laws in your ear up the side of a mountain with snow pelting down coping on that the snow chains are wrong size. One other thing fill the car with diesel in resort as soon as you get there , as the local fuel will not freeze , I told my brother no to bother his hole with it we would fill up the next day , it was -14 that nite and the poxy fuel froze

Sorry to dredge up this thread again, but we were just confirming all the details for the trip. We have been told that the car we have booked is fitted with summer tyres, and that chains 'should' be available but cannot be guaranteed. All this is making me a little nervous about the car, any time i have driven to ski resorts it has always been on snow tyres.

Basically i am asking the question will it be safe enough to drive up there on summer tyres using chains where necessacary and also if the hire company cannot supply chains are they easy enough to get when we are over there?

I don't know, but I'd check that out, driving with summer tyres might not even be legal. Try check out the weather forecast and driving conditions before you go, some times you see driving conditions listed in a resorts website and whether you need chains, winter tyres etc. or not.
