Comparing RTE with the BBC is not comparing like with like.
Their target audiences are different, i.e, Irish and British.

The audiences aren't different. People in Ireland are part of the BBC's audience while of course few people in Britain will make up RTE's audience. There's no need for the aul patriotism argument to come out but Ireland and Britain are essentially the one audience with regards to social and cultural media. Sure there'll be facets of Irish life better suited to an Irish broadcaster absolutely but the BBC have various "regional variations" for this purpose - though there's obviously and England-centric thing that goes on.

TG4 trumps RTE for documentaries relating to Irish culture I think. RTE have been pathcy at best over the last two years with their programmes focused on the crash.

With regards to sports coverage the BBC are pathetically biased in their commentating and analysis - "wow look at what England just won! ... hey this is an injustice against England". The folks working in RTE trump them absolutely with usually fair analysis and credit where it's due, usually.

I think the audience in Ireland might disagree with BBC 1 have just 5% share and BBC 2 having 2.5%, as would the BBC whom don't target their programmes at an Irish audience (for the reasons you outline). The additional digital channels of the last 10 years haven't caused a drop in RTÉ, TV3 or TG4 rather the new digital channels have proved that the majority of Irish viewers view UK channels as purely extra channels with BBC, UTV and C4 seeing major drops in audience share.

    BBC, no comparison really.

BBC have much bigger budget which helps of course.
