Fact...err...no, that is your opinion. You seem to misunderstand the concept of a fact.

I watch more shows on RTE than on BBC...therefore RTE better in my opinion.

You can't compare the two. BBC's budget is 20x more than RTE. I like both though. RTE usually gets slated here and I've no idea why. RTE's soccer coverge/analysis kills british channels. RTE were the first station in europe to get The Sopranos. I could go on and on..

The correct answer is Channel 4 anyway.

BBC but then they have a colossal budget, not realy a fair comparison

And to be fair, the football coverage on RTE is better then BBC
RTE are damn good at sports coverage

I watched the Olympics on RTÉ over any other channel

So don't bother quoting me and fyp,

It's nothing to do with the budget...it should be about quality over quantity.
RTE churns out planks like Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubridy.
And the quality of their journalism is cringe worthy.

I remember listening to live RTE report and counted the word 'eh' being used 43 times. What sort of journalist says 'eh'?

Chums like Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubridy? So why did the BBC want Tubridy to present Jonathan Ross's Saturday morning radio show then? Pat Kenny is also a brilliant political broadcaster. The BBC also made numerous big money offers to Gay Byrne over the years to poach him from RTE.

Comparing RTE with the BBC is not comparing like with like.
Their target audiences are different, i.e, Irish and British.

Perhaps those who prefer the BBC are more attracted to aspects
of British culture and feel more comfortable with that. No problem there.

But given their perspective budgets, I think RTE do very well to compete.

And as a previous poster said, RTE's sports coverage is much better.
The BBC used to be the best sports broadcasters in the world and set
the template for others to follow. But they have spent most of the past decade dumbing down.
    Wimbledon being a rare exception.

At least RTE still treat the sports viewer with a degree of intellegence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭Pauleta

For making their own programmes BBC, for buying stuff abroad RTE and thats because they prices are cheaper for Ireland.

No it's not and no they don't. RTE paid for the 2009 World Athletics Championships and then didn't bother showing them. Their sports coverage is all about the lowest common denominator. They covered the World Swimming Championships this year the week AFTER they were over, and then they only showed races that had Irish competitors. How ****ing bizarre. Why don't they apply this reasoning to the soccer world cup? It'd save a lot of money and broadcast time. And a lot of their so-called homegrown shows are straight copies of what the Beeb do.

The BBC is far superior to RTE and their budgets have absolutely fuk all to do with it, quality over quantity as someone else mentioned.

It's also not pro-Brit/anti-Irish to say so either.

And for those saying RTE's sports coverage is better......maybe it is.
But what about those of us who couldn't give a toss about sports?

If that's their only strong point then they have absolutely nothing to offer the rest of us.

Oh, apart from ad breaks and breaking away to the news in the middle of a film maybe.

    Chums??
    I said 'churns'.

These presenters were likely approached because they have large followings.
If they were to go to the BBC, the hope would be that they would take their audiences with them.
This is not a reflection on the quality of their presenting.

Why would the BBC care about an Irish audience for any of their channels, especially radio? BBC radio is hardly widespread in this country anyway.

That doesn't answer the question at all. BBC receive no advertising money so why would they care about Irish listeners? We do not pay them.

I can receive their radio stations via satellite. Not much use to anyone who listens to the radio in the car, ie. most people.

    ITV are the worst offenders.

It has everything to do with budget.

RTE TV licence income is apx €200m.

BBC TV licence income alone is apx €4000 million.

BBC also receive €336 million from government grants, and about €915 million from BBC Commercial Businesses.

They have sheds loads of money. They CAN and DO pay what they want for presenters, the type salaries that RTE could never compete with ! Their programming is high quality but it should be given the wads of cash they have to play with.

As said earlier its an unfair comparison. RTE's job is to provide a service that reflects the culture of Ireland of 5m. The BBC have to serve 66m people.

Oh and by the way, regardless of which is better, the viewing figures in Ireland make more interesting reading.

    Channel/Share of total viewing (%)
    1 RTÉ One 25.79
    2 TV3 Ireland 12.30
    3 RTÉ Two 9.65
    4 BBC One NI 5.29
    5 UTV 4.53
    6 Channel 4 3.74
    7 BBC Two 3.06
    8 TG4 2.67
    9 Sky1 1.92
    10 E4 1.19

Can't compare the two. RTE can only dream of producing such programmes like the David Attenborough BBC documentaries (Life, planet earth, life among the undergrowth, I could go on) which are some of the best programmes ever made by any tv station.

Or even 3e! Who so lovingly provide that little square picture in the centre of the screen, for all those dewey eyed lovers of nostalgia. Joking aside though, for the minuscule budget they have to work with RTÉ provide quite a good service on both radio and television. Their news and current affairs coverage are as good as anything the others produce. Granted they may not have the slick hi tech presentation of some of them, but thats a monetary issue not creative or editorial.

RTE might not be able to produce such programming but they could still show them. While some might argue that given the high level of BBC penetration in Ireland theres little point rehashing programmes currently/recently shown on the Beeb there are other sources for such programming. e.g. the better offerings from PBS.

RTE often use the terms "public service" and "home produced" programming as if they are one and the same thing which is patently nonsense.

Of course domestic productions are important (and to be fair to RTE the standard of the documentaries they do produce have improved somewhat in recent years) but the emphisis should be on quality over quantity.

One downside of the move to digital TV is that if it leads to more RTE channels being set up the programming budget could be spread even thinner than it is now.

So if you consider such threads to be so "pointless" why do you not only choose to read them but bump them back up to the top of the board by contributing to commenting on them

Its not as if boards.ie force you to financially contribute to their hosting of "pointless" threads :p

So all in all commenting on the "pointlessness" of the odd thread in an otherwise interesting forum does seem rather ....well pointless !
