64 bit vs 32 bit processors

I want to buy a new laptop but i'm a bit thrown by 64 bit processors.
If i got a 64 bit machine would i have problems installing software/drivers etc that i already run on a 32 bit machine.
And do only certain OSes (eg Windows 7) run on 64 bit.
Do 64 bit machines need a minimum amount of RAM (4gb?).

Basically, what are the disadvantages of 64 bit over 32 bit.
I'm looking to get a decent, future-proof machine but don't need anything very high end (not a gamer etc).
So would 64 bit be more trouble than it's worth.
Or would it be recommended.

There aren't any disadvantages. Not unless you're trying to work with old tech, like last century's printers. There isn't a processor out there right now that isn't 64-bit capable that im aware of.
