Anyone care to pm me details of the excursion in the first week of GV?

Please don't say ' it's a secret' or 'don't want to spoil the surprise'

Reality is starting to hit me! Nervous and excited!

Also, I've read that blokes have to be clean shaven everyday. I only shave once a week otherwise my face would be a bloodbath -sensitive thing that I am! Any tips?

That's correct about lads being clean shaven. Best thing in your case might be an electric razor - typical Christmas present !

I was the same dude, any more than every other day and I was bleeding everywhere. Thankfully now I'm out i've grown a beard :-D

when I was in u found <mod snip> shaving/moisturising cream a godsend. Was about 35quid for a tub but it lasted all of gv and gave me a blood free wet shave every day. Miracle stuff! On the subject of electric razors, the drill staff will probably notice, it won't give a close enough shave I don't think. Didn't know of anyone using them in my squad

Got the call last week and was shocked as I wasnt expecting it at all! Very happy and cant wait to get started but I am very nervous! Does anyone know anything about what happens if I have had a holiday booked months ago but the date is during my training?

Alas you're out of luck - the absolute maximum allowed off from training is 5 days , this includes funerals , sickness , force majeure , etc .
Basically your holiday is gone but what of it ? I don't want to sound ' hard-boiled ' but it really is not a big deal at the end of the day , you've been lucky enough to get in - plenty of time for holidays after Garnerville I reckon.
    Congratulations by the way.

Yea thats what i thought, that 7 days would be pushing it! But like you said, Im in and I can always book another at a later time :) Thank you and thanks for your reply, really cant wait to get started!

Hey guys, about the shaving thing I share your pain (literally) as I have very sensitive skin.
I had a beard until recently and decided to start shaving again so invested in some <mod snip> shaving soap, <mod snip> skin food and moisturising lotion.
Its not cheap, about £15-£20 quid for a 200ml bottle but I've had them for about 3 months now and I'm only getting to the bottom of the bottle, you only need to use very little.
Anyway my point is they've made such a difference, I can now have a close comfortable shave every day, now wishing I hadn't been such a tight arse for so long!

Lads , I'm sitting here chuckling away to myself at these posts - if the Girls on the forum were discussing what type of foundation was acceptable or what shade of mascara or lipstick they might get away with all you fellas would be thinking to yourselves '' tut...women... '' .
I'm dying to know what the ladies think of all this :D

Whats next lads '' Och , I recommend Lacoste aftershave miself.....turns the women into beasts '' :p ?

I stress that this is me speaking as a fellow boardie and not as mod.

    Anyone care to advise?

When do you pick your DCU? How many choices/ preferences have you got? Do most recruits get their preferred choice? Say you wanted to get posted to your local DCU, but specifically not the 'sector' in which you live.. What is the chance that you will be accommodated?

I dont exactly want to be on my own doorstep, so to speak, but similarly dont really want to spend half my working day travelling to and from work. Hope this doesn't sound fussy of me, just being realistic.

Thanks for that mate. Is that what the cream is actually called and where is the best place to find it?

Del - nothing wrong with a bloke wanting to look as best as one can!

You get to express you wishes at week 12 but in reality you'll get put wherever they need you.

Anyone in the new intake, come and find me on SID. I was an army cadet in school so I know how to bull boots and iron uniform, will be willing to trade lessons for favours;);)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭Stoic_Copper

hehe. Why do they call it bulling? I just call it shining. It takes a bit of getting used to, but its all part of the fun. As for the ironing, some people can never get the knack I think. But we all can;t be good at everything. Teamwork. That's how it all gets done.

I'm fairly certain it's that, however on googling it brought up a different product. Regardless, it's the guys in castlecourt shopping centre. Israeli I think they are, they have stalls in the middle, u can't miss them, they grab u ad ur walking past and give u the hard sell. It is worth it though, IRS a pre shave moisturiser, shaving cream and exfoliator in one. Great stuff

What about after the 4 weeks ? By that I mean folks from too far away and have to ' live in ' - do they pay an accomodation charge ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭princess deity

After the initial 4 weeks everyone is turfed out with exception of the people whom live too far to commute. The people who live too far away to commute must apply to live in hotel G'ville for the full duration of the training. There is no charge for the people whom live in for the full duration of training.
