Aye, thats the one. So in that case is tighter better (within reason)?

has anyone tried irish lifting's bodybuilding belt? Their powerlifting one is 13mm which everyone seems to recommend against and it's 20 quid extra too. If the cheaper belt works well/is durable etc, I'd prefer to go for it

I have it I would prefer a single prong belt tbh. I never had a problme with the thickness in my use of it but many others have and I think a 10mm would probably be a little more supple and easier to use without losing any support.

10mm would be more supple than the bodybuilding belt? It's only 1/4" i.e. ~6mms

does the extra prong really make that much of a difference? I didn't realise it could be much of a factor in deciding on which belt to chose

ugh sorry it was late and I thought you were talking about the powerlifting belt. I have used a bodybuilding belt once or twice and its for show more than anything else its not going to give you anything like the same support as a powerlifting belt. You can't really brace against it either because as hanley said the front it thinner. It will remind you to keep your abs tight but it won't give you much to press them against.
The extra prong just makes it really awkward to get in and out of the belt imo, there's no extra strength from it so single prong just makes more sense.
I guess it comes down to needs but if you are going to be doing say heavy max effort squats or deads I don't think the bodybuilding belt is the way to go personally. Are there any belts in your gym or people you know with belts that you can try out before buying?

Hanley where did you get the belt you use in some of your videos? It's not the contemporary style with the prongs it seems to snap into place like a magnet or something?

It's a lever belt dude. Two prongs hook in and then ya close to lock.

Is it normal for the belt to ride up when you go from standing to the starting position for deads or does that mean I have it on too loose?this question feels
like it should be in fashion and appearance lol.

Either too loose, or down too low. Your belly button should be roughly in the middle of the belt.

Am I foolish to be hoping to get any decent 10mm powerlifting belt for less than 40 euro or would anywhere sell that? Really wanna get the finger out and order one.

If there's a shop in Dublin to get it, even better 'cause then someone can buy me one for Christmas actually. :)

I got one from ebay although it's a double prong design which ain't too popular. €30 delivered though.

    Me.

I'm back wearing my 13mm belt now, but I ditched it for a long time after it broke one of my ribs.

Hmm...now I'm a bit confused. Any reason why you've gone back to it? Would you still recommend the one I linked to even though it broke one of your ribs? :D

I'm wearing it differently now and my core's a lot more solid, so the chance of it getting up under my ribs are low.

The one linked from Irish Lifting is fine. Once oyu figure out how to keep it away from your ribs, you're sorted.

Do I think you'd do just as well with 10mm? Yup. I've squatted over 300kg with a 10mm belt and never questioned it's support.

Ultimately if the 13mm's the easiest to get, go for it.

So I'm gonna finally get a belt to hopefully help me improve at squats, deadlifts and presses.

I don't want to spend that much. Looking at 2 or 3 here on amazon (I've a bunch of other stuff in my cart there so really just want to make one order off this site if possible)

Here's two double prong jobs, the first one got a good review from some lad that seems to have a clue at least:
    http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Power-Weight-Lifting-Royal/dp/B0028H1BD8/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1295483067&sr=1-1
    http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Power-Weight-Lifting-Black/dp/B0028H00PS/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1295482518&sr=8-21

...and here's a singleprong one from the same supplier, I'm thinking of going for this, assuming it's the same quality as the other two:
    http://www.amazon.com/Power-Lifting-belt-prone-Large/dp/B0038OSSK4/ref=pd_sbs_sg_10

    They're all 4" wide and 3/8" (9.52mm) thick.

Any advice on the belts above appreciated, thanks.
