If it's on that shelf unit at the back corner then it's in the "4 ales for a tenner" deal. Great value - Young's Special London Ale & Belhaven Scottish Stout are both fantastic, Old Thumper is good too. :)

Thats a good bargain there alright. Staroprammen is 1.99 in tescos & 2.49 in my local offie.

Ive mentioned my offie a few times because its an overpriced dump. Pretty much any decent beers they have are 30 - 50 cent more expensive than other off-licences & tescos/dunnes mysteriously. Example; Chimay trappist in local offie - 3.30/ tescos - 2.89/ bradleys north main st - 2.69.

McGraths Irish red ale from the Clanconnel brewery.
Nice ale not up to O' Hara's red or the Aldi IMHO but still a good red.
It quite sweet when you first taste it then a dry malty finish.

    Any Cobra fans?

Got a bottle of my friends homebrew tonight. Really nice stuff, it's a pale ale made with wild hops he found growing near the Lee, down around UCC. Tastes like Blarny Blonde for those of you around Cork. Can't wait to have it properly chilled tonight.

It's an interesting one all right, but yeah, I think it could do wih being pumped up a bit more.

I do like Cobra, and I loved when they were selling it in 50cl cans. But I hate piddling about with 33cl bottles when I've a plate of vindaloo in front of me, and the 66cl bottles are too big. Bring back the cans!

Have a couple of Fullers London Pride Ale and Old Speckled Hen for tonight.

I also picked up the Erdinger Octoberfest beer to see what it's like

Few Erdiner octoberfest, an erdinger kristal and a few o hara's IPA, wasn't a huge fan of o hara's IPA but it's really starting to grow on me now very enjoyable.

Had a few quality beers last night.

Fullers London Pride - really nice ale, the smell is excellent.
Rochefort trappist 8 - jesus, that stuff is strong. Can't say i thought it was delicious but its pure quality & very pungent. Im new to this sort of ale & it'l take a bit more experience to fully appreciate it.
Weihenstephaner hefe weissbier - really nice smelling wheat beer. Will buy again. Too easy to drink.
Sierra Nevada Torpedo - hate to say it but i found it only average. Quite bitter on the palate. Disappointed. Will try other beers from this brand though.
Blue moon - Absolutely beautiful belgian style beer. Beer of the night for me.

American IPA brewers tend to go for extreme bitterness which can take a while to get used to. Maybe try the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale next time which is a bit like a toned down version of the Torpedo- lower in alcohol and bitterness but with plenty of flavour..

Tried some Fraoch heather ale in the Bierhaus earlier. It's very nice, but pricey. Perhaps I'll find it in an off license.

    Guinness Foreign Extra.
It might not be the best beer in the world, but it's damned tasty all the same.

    Had a very hoppy Saturday.

Started with two bottles of Taras Boulba (http://www.brasseriedelasenne.be/bieres.html) which were very nice.

From there moved to a bar called Chez Moeder Lambic which any beer tourist to Brussels will surely have visited. This bar has a seriously good selection of draught beer. Almost all Belgian (about 30) plus a could of foreign guest beers. They do have a bottle menu too, but I hear its quite expensive so I stayed away - perhaps in the future I'll venture there but for the time being, the taps need exploring!

So here I started with a glass of XX Bitter (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/de-ranke-xx-bitter/9183/). This took things to a whole other level. Don't get me wrong, the earlier bottles I had were damn good, but this was a real beer. Full of flavour but despite what it says on that website, very manageable hoppiness and bitterness (I am a fan of the bitter flavour though, I love a Campari for example ;))

My girlfriend though had another beer than I, though the name I can't remember. It began with a V and was a blond. The beer mat had the name V..... Blond, written in black on a yellow/gold backing.
The reason I'd so much like to know the name is because this beer I think is perhaps the nicest I have ever tasted. It had a definite elderflower scent and carried slightly into the taste and the aromas were of the freshest hops I've ever experienced. The bitterness did not so much carry through to the ending, but in a deliberate fashion to maintain the smoother flowery fresh taste. Magnificent, 5 stars.

Any help on finding the name of this brewery would be well appreciated. On the other hand, I'm sure Ill be back there rather soon to check the beer out again, in particular to see if my previous 3 beers gave me an "adjusted" sense of taste.

In conclusion, this was probably my nicest beer evening I've ever had. Didn't get drunk so could appreciate all the beers (didn't mention that I finished off all my girlfriends beers bar one I think :P). And the bar Moeder Lambic is one of (if not the) best bars I've ever been to. Go there if ever in town, you will not be disappointed (a far nicer place than Delerium!

Edit: Beer was Valeir Blond made by the Contreras brewery.

It's a happy week in The Abbot's, Cork.
The Hommelbier keg is finished and now on draught is Kwak (8.5% and seems less sugary on draught than from bottle) and St. Bernardus Abt 12 (10.5%). The latter is a very nice, dark, fruity, strong Belgian ale.
    Both €3.50 a half pint.
Pity to have two dark Belgians on at the same time, though.
And with Gulden Draak on draught in The Bierhaus, it's like a dark, strong Belgian minifestival in Cork!

Kwak on draught? You just found this week's after-exam watering hole for me!

    Old Speckled Hen.
    Hobgoblin.

Both nice.^ I tried the hobgoblin & london pride this weekend & thought both were really nice. Hobgoblin is a superb colour of dark ruby red. Tastey stuff. Its available in Dunnes at the moment.
